Does God still heal today?
Maybe you or someone you love is sick, and you’re asking God for a miracle. Does He still do what He did in the Bible?
Yes. God still heals today. Jesus healed every kind of sickness, His followers kept healing in His name, and Scripture tells us to keep praying for the sick: “Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and to anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will restore the one who is sick” (James 5:14–15). Jesus’ suffering on the cross paid for our healing as well as our forgiveness: “by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). God heals through miracles, through medicine and doctors, and finally, completely, in the resurrection. Pray boldly, and trust Him with the answer.

The woman who touched His cloak
A woman had been bleeding for twelve years. She had spent everything she had on doctors and only gotten worse. She pushed through the crowd thinking, “If only I touch His garments, I will be healed.” She touched His cloak and was healed instantly. Jesus stopped, looked for her, and said, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace” (Mark 5:25–34). He didn’t just heal her body. He called her daughter.
How to pray for healing
1. Ask God directly and specifically (Philippians 4:6).
2. Call for the elders of your church to pray and anoint you with oil (James 5:14).
3. Let believers lay hands on you and pray in Jesus’ name (Mark 16:18).
4. Confess any sin and forgive others (James 5:16; Mark 11:25).
5. Keep praying. Keep going to the doctor. God uses both.
When healing doesn’t come
Paul prayed three times for his “thorn” to be removed, and God said, “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:7–9). Paul left his friend Trophimus sick in Miletus (2 Timothy 4:20). Not being healed is not proof you lacked faith. God is still good, and for every believer, full healing is guaranteed: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain” (Revelation 21:4).
Is going to the doctor a lack of faith?
No. Luke, who wrote two books of the Bible, was a doctor (Colossians 4:14). Paul told Timothy to take some wine for his stomach (1 Timothy 5:23). Medicine is one of the ways God heals.
What the Bible says
- 01
Pray and anoint.
“Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power to prevail.”
James 5:14–16 - 02
By His stripes.
“Surely He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows; yet we considered Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.”
Isaiah 53:4–5 - 03
Your faith has healed you.
“And a woman was there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years. She had borne much agony under the care of many physicians and had spent all she had, but to no avail. Instead, her condition had only grown worse. When the woman heard about Jesus, she came up through the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. For she kept saying, “If only I touch His garments, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction. At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from Him. Turning to the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My garments?” His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’” But He kept looking around to see who had done this. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth. “Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.””
Mark 5:25–34 - 04
Who heals all your diseases.
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and do not forget all His kind deeds— He who forgives all your iniquities and heals all your diseases,”
Psalm 103:2–3 - 05
When healing doesn’t come.
“or because of these surpassingly great revelations. So to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
2 Corinthians 12:7–10 - 06
No more pain.
“‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.””
Revelation 21:4

Common questions
Is sickness from the devil?
Sometimes Scripture connects sickness to spiritual attack (Luke 13:16). Often it’s simply part of living in a broken world. Either way, pray.
Should I stop my medicine if I believe I’m healed?
No. Let your doctor confirm it. God isn’t afraid of a test.
Why does God heal some people and not others?
We don’t always know. We do know His love and His goodness never change, and every believer will be fully healed in the resurrection.
Pray with people, not alone.
