What does the Bible say about success?
You want to build something: a business, a career, a future for your family. But you’ve heard that ambition is dangerous. Is it wrong for a Christian to want to win?
It is not wrong to want success. God blesses work done well, and the Bible is full of people He made successful: Joseph, Daniel, Nehemiah. “The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man” (Genesis 39:2). What matters is how you define success and who gets the glory. God tells Joshua the key to success is His Word: “Meditate on it day and night… For then you will prosper and succeed in all you do” (Joshua 1:8). Success God’s way is being faithful with what He gives you, building with integrity, and using it to bless others.

Joseph succeeded everywhere he was put
Joseph was sold by his brothers as a slave. In Potiphar’s house, “the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man,” and Potiphar put him in charge of everything. Thrown into prison on a false charge, he soon ran the prison too. Then in one day he went from the prison to second in command of Egypt, and used that position to save nations from famine, including the brothers who sold him (Genesis 39–41; 50:20). Success followed him because God was with him, and he used it to bless others.
What the Bible says about success
Work hard: “Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23). Be faithful in small things first (Luke 16:10). Plan wisely (Proverbs 21:5). Keep integrity (Proverbs 10:9). Remember who gives the ability (Deuteronomy 8:18).
When success becomes a trap
When it replaces God. When it costs your family or your integrity. When it makes you proud. “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36).
Success that lasts
Build something that outlives you: a family that knows God, wealth that blesses generations (Proverbs 13:22), and a life that hears, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).
What the Bible says
- 01
Prosper and succeed.
“This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in all you do.”
Joshua 1:8 - 02
The LORD was with Joseph.
“And the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the LORD was with him and made him prosper in all he did, Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household and entrusted him with everything he owned. From the time that he put Joseph in charge of his household and all he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s household on account of him. The LORD’s blessing was on everything he owned, both in his house and in his field. So Potiphar left all that he owned in Joseph’s care; he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,”
Genesis 39:2–6 - 03
As for the Lord.
“Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, as for the Lord and not for men, because you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as your reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Colossians 3:23–24 - 04
The power to gain wealth.
“You might say in your heart, “The power and strength of my hands have made this wealth for me.” But remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant that He swore to your fathers even to this day.”
Deuteronomy 8:17–18 - 05
- 06
The whole world.
“What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?”
Mark 8:36
Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.
Write your definition of success in one sentence. Then rewrite it so God is at the center and someone else is blessed by it.
Common questions

Wealth isn’t evil, but the love of money is dangerous (1 Timothy 6:10). Build with purpose and generosity.
Is ambition a sin?
Selfish ambition is (James 3:16). Ambition to do well for God’s glory is not.
