What is grace?

You’ve sung “Amazing Grace,” and you’ve heard “saved by grace.” But what is grace, really, and why does it matter so much?

The short answer

Grace is God giving you what you don’t deserve and could never earn: His love, His forgiveness, His Spirit and eternal life, given as a gift. “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9). Mercy is God not giving you the punishment you deserve. Grace goes further and gives you the blessing you don’t deserve. In plain words: mercy cancels your debt; grace adopts you into the family.

The father ran

A son demanded his inheritance early, left home and wasted every cent on wild living. Broke and starving, feeding pigs, he decided to go home and beg to be a hired servant. “But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.” Before the son could finish his speech, the father called for the best robe, a ring, sandals and a feast (Luke 15:11–24). The son came hoping for a job. He got his whole family back. That is grace.

Grace vs. mercy, in plain words

Justice: getting what you deserve. Mercy: not getting the punishment you deserve. Grace: getting the good you don’t deserve. The prodigal son deserved to be turned away (justice). His father didn’t punish him (mercy). Then he threw him a party (grace).

Grace isn’t permission to sin

“Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase? Certainly not!” (Romans 6:1–2). Grace doesn’t just forgive you; it trains you to say no to sin and live for God (Titus 2:11–12).

Grace for every day

Grace isn’t only how you’re saved. It’s also how you keep going. When Paul begged God to remove his thorn, God said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Saved by grace.

“For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.”

    Ephesians 2:8–9
  2. 02

    The father ran.

“Then Jesus said, “There was a man who had two sons. The younger son said to him, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. After a few days, the younger son got everything together and journeyed to a distant country, where he squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent all he had, a severe famine swept through that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed the pigs. He longed to fill his belly with the pods the pigs were eating, but no one would give him a thing. Finally he came to his senses and said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have plenty of food, but here I am, starving to death! I will get up and go back to my father and say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”’ So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. The son declared, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. ’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let us feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again! He was lost and is found!’ So they began to celebrate.”

    Luke 15:11–24
  3. 03

    Not permission to sin.

“What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase? Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer?”

    Romans 6:1–2
  4. 04

    Grace trains us.

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to everyone. It instructs us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live sensible, upright, and godly lives in the present age,”

    Titus 2:11–12
  5. 05

    Sufficient grace.

“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.”

    2 Corinthians 12:9
  6. 06

    The throne of grace.

“Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

    Hebrews 4:16

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Write down one thing you’ve been trying to earn from God. Then thank Him that it’s already a gift.

Common questions

Can you lose God’s grace?

God’s grace doesn’t run out on someone fighting their sin. But a person can deliberately walk away from Christ and reject it (Hebrews 10:26–29).

Is grace only in the New Testament?

No. God showed grace to Noah (Genesis 6:8), to Israel, and to David. It’s fully revealed in Jesus (John 1:17).

What does “saying grace” mean?

Thanking God before a meal, recognizing that every good thing is a gift from Him.
