If someone lived a good life, why would God allow them to die in a bad way?

Someone you love lived a good life, and their death was cruel: an illness, an accident, violence. It doesn’t seem fair, and it can make you question everything you believed about God.

The short answer

Scripture never promises good people an easy death. Some of the most faithful people in the Bible died in terrible ways, including Jesus Himself. Death, in every form, is the result of a world broken by sin, not a measure of how good a person was. What God promises is this: for those who belong to Him, death is not the end and not the last word. They are with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8), and one day He will wipe away every tear and death will be no more (Revelation 21:4).

Someone who’s been here

John the Baptist died in a prison

Jesus said no one born of a woman was greater than John the Baptist (Matthew 11:11). John spent his life preparing the way for Jesus. Yet he ended up in prison for speaking the truth to a king, and was beheaded at a birthday party because of a dancer’s request (Matthew 14:3–12). His death was senseless and cruel. And Jesus called him great. How someone dies doesn’t measure their worth to God.

Why it happens

Death entered the world through sin (Romans 5:12), and in a broken world, suffering doesn’t fall neatly on the deserving. Jesus said the people killed when a tower fell weren’t worse than anyone else (Luke 13:4–5). We often won’t know why this happened to this person.

What we know for sure

God was with them in it (Psalm 23:4). He grieves with you (John 11:35). For those in Christ, the worst moment of their life on earth was followed by the best moment of their existence: seeing Jesus face to face.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    At home with the Lord.

“We are confident, then, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”

    2 Corinthians 5:8
  2. 02

    No more death.

“‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.””

    Revelation 21:4
  3. 03

    Precious in His sight.

“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.”

    Psalm 116:15
  4. 04

    Taken away from evil.

“The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; devout men are taken away, while no one considers that the righteous are taken away from the presence of evil. Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest, lying down in death.”

    Isaiah 57:1–2
  5. 05

    Not worth comparing.

“I consider that our present sufferings are not comparable to the glory that will be revealed in us.”

    Romans 8:18
  6. 06

    Even though they die.

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies. And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?””

    John 11:25–26

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Write down three ways your loved one’s good life touched others. Thank God for each one by name.

Common questions

Was God punishing them?

No. Jesus rejected the idea that suffering means someone was worse than others (Luke 13:1–5; John 9:3).

Did they suffer at the end?

You may not know. What you can know is that God was present, and that for those in Christ, all suffering is over now.

How do I trust God after this?

Honestly, and slowly. Bring your questions to Him; the Psalms show that faith and grief can live together.
