Do children go to heaven?

If you’ve lost a baby or a child, through miscarriage, illness or an accident, no words are enough. And if you’re asking because you fear for them, please read this: God’s heart for children is tender.

The short answer

Yes. Become teaches that babies and young children who die go to be with the Lord. When King David’s infant son died, he said, “I will go to him, but he will not return to me” (2 Samuel 12:23), confident of seeing his child again. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me… for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14). God holds people accountable for rejecting Him when they are able to understand (Deuteronomy 1:39; James 4:17), and a child who isn’t able to understand is safe in His hands.

David knew where his son had gone

David’s infant son became gravely ill, and David fasted and lay on the ground praying for seven days. When the child died, his servants were afraid to tell him. But David got up, washed, worshiped and ate. When they asked why, he said, “Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me” (2 Samuel 12:15–23). His grief was real, and so was his hope.

For grieving parents

Your child was known and loved by God before you ever held them (Psalm 139:13–16; Jeremiah 1:5). Your grief is a sign of your love, and God is close to you in it (Psalm 34:18). Grieving a miscarriage or the loss of a child is real grief; let people walk with you through it.

What about older children?

There’s no set age in Scripture. As children grow, they come to understand right and wrong and their need for Jesus. Lead them to Him early, and trust God, who is perfectly just and loving, with every child.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    I will go to him.

“David answered, “While the child was alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let him live.’ But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.””

    2 Samuel 12:22–23
  2. 02

    Let the little children come.

“But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them! For the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.””

    Matthew 19:14
  3. 03

He took them in His arms.

“Now people were bringing the little children to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them, and the disciples rebuked those who brought them. But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and told them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them! For the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And He took the children in His arms, placed His hands on them, and blessed them.”

    Mark 10:13–16
  4. 04

    Known before birth.

“For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written in Your book and ordained for me before one of them came to be.”

    Psalm 139:13–16
  5. 05

Children who don’t yet know good from evil.

“And the little ones you said would become captives—your children who on that day did not know good from evil—will enter the land that I will give them, and they will possess it.”

    Deuteronomy 1:39
  6. 06

    No more tears.

“‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.””

    Revelation 21:4

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

Common questions

Do babies who die in the womb go to heaven?

Yes. God knows and loves each child from the womb (Psalm 139:13). They are safe with Him.

Do children have to be baptized to go to heaven?

No. Salvation comes by God’s grace, not by a ritual. Baptism is a step of obedience for those who believe.

Will I see my child again?

For those who belong to Jesus, yes. Like David, you can say, “I will go to him.”
