Is Hades the same as hell?
You’ve heard “Hades,” “Sheol,” “hell” and “the lake of fire,” and it’s confusing. Are they all the same place? Here is a clear answer.
Not quite. Hades (Greek) and Sheol (Hebrew) are the place of the dead. For those who reject God, Hades is like a holding cell: a real place of torment where they wait for the final judgment. Hell, in its final form, is the lake of fire, where they are sent after judgment. Think of jail and prison: someone is held in jail awaiting trial, and after sentencing they go to prison. At the end, “Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:14).

The rich man in Hades was fully aware
In Jesus’ account of the rich man and Lazarus, the rich man is in Hades, and everything about him is still there: he can see Abraham and Lazarus far off, he can speak, he feels agony and thirst, he remembers his life (“Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things”), and he is worried about his five brothers (Luke 16:23–28). He is the same person, intelligent and aware, now facing the consequences of a life without God.
What Hades is like
It is a place of torment. The rich man said, “I am in agony in this fire” (Luke 16:24). It is a place of separation: a great chasm stands between those with God and those apart from Him (Luke 16:26). And it is a place of a tormented mind: he remembered his life, his choices and his family, and he could do nothing about any of it.
The holding cell and the prison
Hades is temporary: it holds the dead who rejected God until the final judgment. At the great white throne, “the sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead, and each one was judged according to his deeds” (Revelation 20:13). Then Death and Hades themselves are thrown into the lake of fire, the final and permanent hell (Revelation 20:14–15).
Where believers go
Believers don’t go to Hades. When they die, they go immediately to be with the Lord: “today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).
What the Bible says
- 01
The rich man and Lazarus.
“Now there was a rich man dressed in purple and fine linen, who lived each day in joyous splendor. And a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate, covered with sores and longing to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. One day the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. And the rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side. So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire.’ But Abraham answered, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, while you are in agony. And besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that even those who wish cannot cross from here to you, nor can anyone cross from there to us.’ ‘Then I beg you, father,’ he said, ‘send Lazarus to my father’s house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also end up in this place of torment.’ But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let your brothers listen to them.’ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone is sent to them from the dead, they will repent.’ Then Abraham said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’””
Luke 16:19–31 - 02
Hades gives up its dead.
“The sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead, and each one was judged according to his deeds. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death—the lake of fire. And if anyone was found whose name was not written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”
Revelation 20:13–15 - 03
Paradise for believers.
“And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.””
Luke 23:43 - 04
The wicked return to Sheol.
“The wicked will return to Sheol— all the nations who forget God.”
Psalm 9:17 - 05
Jesus holds the keys of Hades.
“the Living One. I was dead, and behold, now I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of Death and of Hades.”
Revelation 1:18 - 06
After death, judgment.
“Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment,”
Hebrews 9:27
Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.
Read Luke 16:19–31 slowly. Then ask: is there anyone I need to warn, like the rich man wished he could?
