If we are made in God’s image, does God look like us?

Genesis says we were made in God’s image. So does that mean God has two arms, two legs and a face like ours? It’s a natural question, and the answer is more meaningful than you might expect.

The short answer

No, being made in God’s image doesn’t mean God looks like us physically. God the Father is spirit (John 4:24). It means we are made to reflect Him and represent Him on earth: we can think, create, love, choose right from wrong, have relationships, and care for the world the way He would (Genesis 1:26–28). In the ancient world, a king placed statues of himself across his land to show who ruled it. God placed living images of Himself, people, across the earth. Jesus is the perfect image of God (Colossians 1:15), and He is restoring that image in everyone who follows Him.

Whose image is on the coin?

Religious leaders tried to trap Jesus by asking whether to pay taxes to Caesar. He asked for a coin: “Whose image is this, and whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they said. “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s” (Matthew 22:19–21). The coin bore Caesar’s image, so it belonged to Caesar. You bear God’s image, so you belong to God.

What the image of God is

Reason and creativity: we think, build, make art and solve problems. Morality: we know right from wrong (Romans 2:15). Relationship: we are made to love God and people. Rule: we are given responsibility to care for creation (Genesis 1:28). In plain words: you were made to show the world what God is like.

Why it matters

Every person, of every race, age and ability, bears God’s image. That is why every life has dignity, why we don’t curse people (James 3:9), and why how we treat people matters to God.

The image restored

Sin damaged the image but didn’t erase it. In Jesus, believers are being “transformed into His image with intensifying glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Made in His image.

“Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth.””

    Genesis 1:26–28
  2. 02

    Jesus, the perfect image.

“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.”

    Colossians 1:15
  3. 03

    Every person bears it.

“With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness.”

    James 3:9
  4. 04

    Being transformed.

“And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

    2 Corinthians 3:18
  5. 05

    Crowned with glory.

“what is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You care for him? You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler of the works of Your hands; You have placed everything under his feet:”

    Psalm 8:4–6
  6. 06

    Renewed in His image.

“and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”

    Colossians 3:10

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Choose one person you find hard to love, and pray: “God, help me see Your image in them.” Then treat them that way this week.

Common questions

Does God have a body?

God the Father is spirit. God the Son took on a human body in Jesus, and still has His resurrected body.

Why does the Bible mention God’s hand or face?

These are pictures that help us understand God’s power and presence, not descriptions of a physical body.

Do animals bear God’s image?

No. Scripture says only humans were made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27), though all creation shows His glory.
