What does the Bible say about simulation theory?

Some very smart people say we might be living in a computer simulation. It sounds like science fiction, but it’s a serious idea in some circles, and it raises a real question: who, or what, made all this?

The short answer

Simulation theory says our universe might be a computer program run by an advanced intelligence. Here is the surprising part: it admits that the universe looks designed and that someone outside it made it. That is what the Bible has said all along. But Scripture says the world is not a fake simulation; it is a real creation made by a real God, who called it “very good” (Genesis 1:31). We are real people with real souls, and the Creator is not a distant programmer running an experiment. He is a Father who stepped into His own creation in Jesus (John 1:14).

God answered Job from the storm

After Job lost everything and demanded answers, God finally spoke to him from a whirlwind: “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who fixed its measurements?” (Job 38:4–5). God then walked Job through the stars, the seas, the animals and the weather. Job was humbled, not because he got an explanation, but because he met the Designer.

Why people believe it

The universe runs on precise mathematical laws, fine-tuned for life, and our own computer worlds keep getting more realistic. Some conclude reality might be code. In plain words: they see design and look for a designer, but they’d rather it be a programmer than God.

Why someone who doesn’t believe in God would accept it

A programmer we will never meet asks nothing of us. A personal God who made us asks for our hearts, and will hold us accountable. Scripture says people can see God’s power in what He made, but sometimes push the truth away (Romans 1:20–21).

What the Bible says instead

God created everything real, physical and good (Genesis 1). He holds it all together (Colossians 1:17). He knows you by name (Isaiah 43:1). And He didn’t stay outside the system. He entered it, lived, died and rose, so you could know Him.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Real and very good.

    Genesis 1:1, 31
  2. 02

    Seen in what He made.

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts.”

    Romans 1:20–21
  3. 03

    Where were you?

“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who fixed its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its foundations set, or who laid its cornerstone, while the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”

    Job 38:4–7
  4. 04

    He holds all things together.

“For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

    Colossians 1:16–17
  5. 05

    The Word became flesh.

    John 1:1–3, 14
  6. 06

    The heavens declare.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

    Psalm 19:1

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Read Job 38 tonight. Then ask God, the real Designer, to show Himself to you.

Common questions

Is simulation theory proof of God?

Not proof, but it concedes a key point: the universe looks designed and depends on something outside it. The Bible names that Designer.

Is it a sin to think about simulation theory?

No. Thinking deeply about reality can lead you to God. Just follow the evidence all the way.

If life were a simulation, would it matter how we live?

The Bible says life is real and every choice matters, because you will stand before the God who made you (Hebrews 9:27).
