Is God real?

Maybe you grew up believing and now you’re not sure. Maybe you never believed but something is making you wonder. Asking is not a weakness; it’s how real faith, or real answers, begin.

The short answer

No one can prove God like a math equation, but there are strong reasons many thoughtful people believe. The universe had a beginning, and things that begin have a cause. Its laws are finely tuned for life. Humans everywhere sense that some things are truly right and wrong. And the historical evidence around Jesus, especially His resurrection, demands an explanation. God is not just an idea to prove but a person to meet, and He promises to be found by those who seek Him (Jeremiah 29:13).

Thomas wanted proof

When the other disciples said Jesus had risen, Thomas refused: “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands… I will never believe.” A week later Jesus appeared and invited Thomas to touch His wounds. Thomas answered, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:24–28). Jesus didn’t shame Thomas for asking. He met him. Honest seekers are still met today.

Four reasons people believe

A beginning. Scientists widely agree the universe had a beginning. Something that begins needs a cause beyond itself.

Fine-tuning. The constants of physics fall within extremely narrow ranges that allow life. Many see design.

Right and wrong. Every culture knows some things, like torturing a child for fun, are truly evil. That points to a moral standard beyond us (Romans 2:14–15).

Jesus. His life, death and the claims of His resurrection are well documented for the ancient world, and His followers were willing to die rather than deny it.

The honest questions

Why is there suffering? Why does God seem hidden? Which religion is right? These are real questions, and people of faith wrestle with them too. Faith isn’t the absence of questions; it is trust in a person while you ask them.

How to look for yourself

Read the Gospel of John, one chapter a day, with an open mind. And pray a simple, honest prayer: “God, if You are real, show me.” Many people who started there found Him.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    The heavens declare.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

    Psalm 19:1
  2. 02

    Seen in what He made.

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse.”

    Romans 1:20
  3. 03

    You will find Him.

“You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.”

    Jeremiah 29:13
  4. 04

    Blessed are those who believe.

“Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.””

    John 20:29
  5. 05

    He rewards those who seek.

“And without faith it is impossible to please God. For anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”

    Hebrews 11:6
  6. 06

    He is not far.

“God intended that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.”

    Acts 17:27

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Read John 1 tonight, then pray, even if it feels strange: “God, if You are real, show me.” Do the same with one chapter of John each day this week.

Common questions

Can science prove or disprove God?

Science studies the natural world and how it works. Whether there is a God beyond nature is a question science points toward but can’t settle alone. Many leading scientists have been believers.

Why doesn’t God just show Himself?

He did, in Jesus, and He still reveals Himself to people who genuinely seek Him, often in ways that respect their freedom rather than overwhelm it.

What if I try and nothing happens?

Keep honestly seeking. Read, ask questions, talk with believers who welcome hard questions. Faith often grows over time, not in one moment.
