“And without faith it is impossible to please God. For anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”
In plain words: You cannot please God without trusting Him. Anyone who comes to Him has to believe He is real, and that He answers people who sincerely look for Him.
What Hebrews 11:6 means.
Faith believes two things: God is real, and He rewards the people who seek Him. Faith expects God to answer.
Common questions about Hebrews 11:6
What does faith actually mean?
Faith is trust. It is not a feeling, and it is not just hoping for the best. When you sit in a chair, you trust it will hold you. Faith works the same way: it trusts that God is real and that He is good. Hebrews 11:1 says faith is being sure of what we hope for, even when we cannot see it yet. This verse names two parts: believing God exists, and believing He answers people who look for Him. Faith is coming to Him with that trust.
Apply it today: Tell God in a short, honest prayer that you want to know Him.
Do I need perfect or strong faith to please God?
No. Faith does not mean you never have doubts. In Mark 9:24, a worried father told Jesus he believed, and then asked Jesus to help his doubts. Jesus did not turn him away. Jesus also said that even faith as small as a mustard seed matters (Matthew 17:20). And Ephesians 2:8-9 says we are saved by grace, which means God's kindness that we do not earn, through faith. Faith is not a test you pass. It is turning toward God and trusting Him, even when your trust feels small.
Apply it today: Name one doubt you have and tell it to God plainly.
What is the reward God gives to people who seek Him?
The reward is not money or an easy life. Hebrews 11 lists many people of faith, and some of them suffered greatly (Hebrews 11:35-38). Hard times never prove that someone lacks faith. The reward is God Himself: knowing Him, being heard by Him, and finding that He is real. Jeremiah 29:13 says people who look for God with all their heart will find Him. When you seek Him sincerely, you are not talking into empty air. He answers, and He can be found.
