What is the Trinity?

One God, but three persons? It sounds like a math problem. Here’s what the Bible teaches, in plain words.

The short answer

The Trinity means there is one God who exists as three persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. Each one is fully God, they are not three gods, and they are not one person wearing three masks. “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One” (Deuteronomy 6:4), and Jesus told us to baptize “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19): one name, three persons. In plain words: God is one God, and within that one God there is a relationship of love that has existed forever.

Someone who’s been here

The day all three showed up at once

When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan, the heavens opened. The Holy Spirit came down on Him like a dove, and a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:16–17). The Son was standing in the water, the Spirit was coming down, and the Father was speaking from heaven, all at the same moment.

What the Bible shows

The Father is God (1 Corinthians 8:6). Jesus is God: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). The Holy Spirit is God: lying to the Spirit is lying to God (Acts 5:3–4). And yet there is only one God (Isaiah 45:5). The Bible puts all four truths side by side, and the Trinity is the name for holding them together.

Pictures that help, and where they fall short

Water can be ice, liquid and steam, but that pictures one thing changing forms, and God doesn’t switch between modes. The sun, its light and its heat get closer. Every picture breaks somewhere, because God is bigger than anything He made. In plain words: we can know it’s true without being able to fully picture it.

Why it matters

Only God could pay for the sins of the world, so Jesus must be God. The Father sent the Son, the Son gave His life, and the Spirit lives in you. Your salvation is the work of the whole Trinity (Ephesians 1:3–14). And God didn’t create us because He was lonely; He has always been love (1 John 4:8).

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    The LORD is One.

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One.”

    Deuteronomy 6:4
  2. 02

    One name.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”

    Matthew 28:19
  3. 03

    At Jesus’ baptism.

“As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!””

    Matthew 3:16–17
  4. 04

    The Word was God.

    John 1:1–3, 14
  5. 05

    The Spirit is God.

“Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and withhold some of the proceeds from the land? Did it not belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? How could you conceive such a deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God!””

    Acts 5:3–4
  6. 06

    Grace, love and fellowship.

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.”

    2 Corinthians 13:14

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Pray today to the Father, through the Son, by the Spirit. Thank each one for what they’ve done for you.

Common questions

Is the word “Trinity” in the Bible?

No, but the teaching is. It’s a word for what Scripture shows from Genesis to Revelation.

Are Jesus and the Father the same person?

No. They are one God, but distinct persons: Jesus prayed to the Father and the Father spoke about the Son.

Is the Holy Spirit a force?

No. He is a person: He teaches, speaks, can be grieved and gives gifts as He decides (John 14:26; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:11).
