Did Jesus exist?

You may have heard that Jesus was a myth, a story borrowed from older religions. It’s a fair thing to ask. The answer from history is clearer than most people expect.

The short answer

Yes. Almost every historian who studies the ancient world, whatever their beliefs, agrees that Jesus of Nazareth was a real man who taught in Galilee and was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He is mentioned by the Roman historian Tacitus and the Jewish historian Josephus, and the New Testament letters about Him were written within a few decades of His death. The real question isn’t whether Jesus existed. It’s who He was.

Paul met Jesus’ own brother

About three years after he came to faith, Paul went to Jerusalem and spent fifteen days with Peter. While there, he also met James, “the Lord’s brother” (Galatians 1:18–19). Paul wrote that in a letter within about twenty years of the crucifixion. You don’t meet the brother of a myth.

What sources outside the Bible say

Tacitus, a Roman historian writing around AD 115, recorded that “Christus” was executed by Pontius Pilate during the reign of Tiberius. Josephus, a Jewish historian writing around AD 93, mentioned Jesus and His brother James. Neither was a Christian.

Why the myth theory doesn’t hold

Jesus is rooted in real places, real rulers and a real date range. His followers were Jews in Jerusalem who were willing to suffer for their claim that they had seen Him alive after His death. Myths grow over centuries; the earliest records of Jesus come within the lifetime of people who knew Him.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Real rulers, real dates.

“In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, while Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness.”

    Luke 3:1–2
  2. 02

    Meeting His brother.

“Only after three years did I go up to Jerusalem to confer with Cephas, and I stayed with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James, the Lord’s brother.”

    Galatians 1:18–19
  3. 03

    The earliest record.

“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas and then to the Twelve. After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles. And last of all He appeared to me also, as to one of untimely birth.”

    1 Corinthians 15:3–8
  4. 04

    What we saw and touched.

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our own eyes, which we have gazed upon and touched with our own hands—this is the Word of life. And this is the life that was revealed; we have seen it and testified to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And this fellowship of ours is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.”

    1 John 1:1–3
  5. 05

    Eyewitnesses.

“For we did not follow cleverly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.”

    2 Peter 1:16
  6. 06

    Why it was written.

“Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.”

    John 20:30–31

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Read 1 Corinthians 15:3–8, one of the earliest Christian records, and notice how many named witnesses it lists.

Common questions

Is Jesus copied from older myths?

The claimed parallels, like Horus or Mithras, mostly come from much later sources or loose comparisons. Jesus is anchored in a specific time, place and Jewish setting.

Why don’t more ancient historians mention Him?

Few writings from that time survive, and Roman historians paid little attention to a teacher from a small province. That He is mentioned at all is significant.

If Jesus existed, was He who He said He was?

That is the real question. The best place to start is to read what He said, in the Gospel of John, and look at the evidence for His resurrection.
