Did Jesus really rise from the dead?

This is the question everything else hangs on. If Jesus rose, nothing is the same. If He didn’t, Christianity falls apart. Paul said so himself. So it’s worth looking at honestly.

The short answer

Yes. Jesus rose bodily from the dead on the third day. The evidence: His tomb was found empty, and even His enemies didn’t dispute it; they claimed the body was stolen. Hundreds of people said they saw Him alive (1 Corinthians 15:6). His frightened followers became bold enough to die for it. And skeptics like His brother James and the persecutor Paul were transformed. Paul put it plainly: if Christ has not been raised, our faith is futile (1 Corinthians 15:17). He has been raised.

The first witnesses were women

On Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene and other women went to the tomb with spices for the body. They found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty, and they were the first to be told He had risen (Luke 24:1–10). In that culture, a woman’s testimony carried little weight in court. If you were inventing a story to convince people, you would never write it this way. The Gospels did, because it is what happened.

The facts most historians accept

Jesus died by crucifixion. His followers believed they saw Him alive afterward. Their belief began in Jerusalem, the very city where He was killed and buried. James, His skeptical brother, and Paul, an enemy of the church, became believers after reporting that they saw Him.

What other explanations miss

Stolen body? The disciples were hiding in fear, and people don’t die for what they know is a lie. Hallucination? Groups don’t share the same hallucination, and visions don’t empty tombs. Wrong tomb? The authorities only had to produce the body. Only the resurrection explains all the facts.

Why it matters to you

If Jesus rose, death is not the end, His words are true, and His promise holds: “Because I live, you also will live” (John 14:19).

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    The witnesses.

“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas and then to the Twelve. After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles. And last of all He appeared to me also, as to one of untimely birth.”

    1 Corinthians 15:3–8
  2. 02

    Everything hangs on it.

“And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If our hope in Christ is for this life alone, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.”

    1 Corinthians 15:17–20
  3. 03

    The empty tomb.

“On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were puzzling over this, suddenly two men in radiant apparel stood beside them. As the women bowed their faces to the ground in terror, the two men asked them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; He has risen! Remember how He told you while He was still in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’” Then they remembered His words.”

    Luke 24:1–8
  4. 04

    He showed them His hands.

“It was the first day of the week, and that very evening, while the disciples were together with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them. “Peace be with you!” He said to them. After He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.”

    John 20:19–20
  5. 05

    We are all witnesses.

“God has raised this Jesus to life, to which we are all witnesses.”

    Acts 2:32
  6. 06

    The resurrection and the life.

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies.”

    John 11:25

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Read Luke 24 tonight from start to finish. Then ask God: “If this is true, show me what it means for me.”

Common questions

Could the disciples have made it up?

They had nothing to gain and everything to lose. Most were persecuted and many were killed for this claim. People may die for something they believe is true, but not for something they know they invented.

Isn’t a resurrection scientifically impossible?

It is impossible by natural causes; that’s the point. The question is whether God exists and acted. If He made the universe, raising a man from the dead is not beyond Him.

What does the resurrection mean for me?

It means your sin can be forgiven, death has been defeated, and you can know the living Jesus today.
