What does Jesus look like?
Most of us picture Jesus the way paintings show Him: long light hair, blue eyes, a soft face. But is that what He really looked like? The Bible says more, and less, than you might expect.
The Bible never describes what Jesus looked like on earth, except to say He was ordinary: “He had no stately form or majesty to attract us, no beauty that we should desire Him” (Isaiah 53:2). He was a Jewish man from first-century Galilee, so He most likely had olive-brown skin, dark hair and dark eyes, and as a carpenter, strong, working hands. The European paintings came much later. But Scripture does describe how Jesus looks now, risen and glorified: hair white like wool, eyes like blazing fire, and a face “like the sun shining at its brightest” (Revelation 1:14–16).

Mary didn’t recognize Him at first
On the morning Jesus rose, Mary Magdalene stood crying at His empty tomb. Jesus stood right behind her, and she thought He was the gardener. Then He said one word: “Mary.” She knew Him instantly (John 20:14–16). What made Jesus recognizable wasn’t His face. It was His voice calling her by name.
Jesus on earth
He was born into a Jewish family in Bethlehem and grew up in Nazareth, in the Middle East. He worked as a builder before His ministry (Mark 6:3) and walked everywhere He went. He looked like an ordinary man of His time and place, which is why Judas had to identify Him with a kiss (Mark 14:44).
Jesus now
At the transfiguration, “His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light” (Matthew 17:2). When John saw the risen Jesus in heaven, he fell at His feet as though dead (Revelation 1:17). The Jesus believers will see is glorious beyond any painting.
Why the Bible doesn’t describe Him
Maybe so that no nation could claim Him as only theirs. Jesus is for every people, every language and every skin tone (Revelation 7:9). What matters most is not His face, but who He is.
What the Bible says
- 01
No stately form.
“He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no stately form or majesty to attract us, no beauty that we should desire Him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.”
Isaiah 53:2–3 - 02
Jesus glorified.
“and among the lampstands was One like the Son of Man, dressed in a long robe, with a golden sash around His chest. The hair of His head was white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes were like a blazing fire. His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and His voice was like the roar of many waters. He held in His right hand seven stars, and a sharp double-edged sword came from His mouth. His face was like the sun shining at its brightest. When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. But He placed His right hand on me and said, “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last,”
Revelation 1:13–17 - 03
His face shone like the sun.
“After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.”
Matthew 17:1–2 - 04
Recognized by His voice.
“When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there. But she did not recognize that it was Jesus. “Woman, why are you weeping?” Jesus asked. “Whom are you seeking?” Thinking He was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried Him off, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).”
John 20:14–16 - 05
The image of the invisible God.
“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.”
Colossians 1:15 - 06
We will see Him as He is.
“Beloved, we are now children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when Christ appears, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is.”
1 John 3:2

Common questions
Was Jesus white?
No. He was a Jewish man from the Middle East. Paintings of a European-looking Jesus reflect the artists, not history.
Was Jesus Black?
He was Middle Eastern, most likely with olive-brown skin. The good news is that He came for every people (Galatians 3:28).
Will we see Jesus’ scars?
His resurrected body still bore the nail marks (John 20:27), and Revelation pictures Him as the Lamb who was slain (Revelation 5:6).
