Common questions about Jeremiah 29:13

What does it mean to seek God with all your heart?

To seek means to look for something on purpose. Seeking with all your heart means being honest and really wanting to know Him, not just trying Him out when life is easy. It does not mean being perfect or having strong feelings. It means wanting the real God more than a quick answer. In Jeremiah 29, God says He will be found by people who look this way. Seeking can be reading the Bible, praying in plain words, and asking real questions. God welcomes honest questions.

Apply it today: Pray one honest sentence today, such as asking God to show you who He really is.

Who was this verse first written to, and does it apply to me?

Jeremiah wrote it to Israelites taken from their homes to live far away in Babylon. They felt lost and far from God. He promised that after seventy years He would bring them home (Jeremiah 29:10, 14). So the promise of return was first for them. But the heart of the verse shows up again in the Bible. Jesus said that everyone who asks receives and everyone who seeks finds (Matthew 7:7-8). James says to come close to God, and He will come close to you (James 4:8). So yes, the way God treats seekers is for you too.

Apply it today: Read Matthew 7:7-8 slowly today and think about what you most want to ask God.

What if I search and feel nothing?

That can be hard, and many people in the Bible felt the same. Feelings come and go, so they are not the best measure. The verse says God can be found, not that you will feel a rush. A good place to look is Jesus. He said that anyone who has seen Him has seen the Father (John 14:9). Reading the Gospel of John is a simple way to meet Him. Keep asking and keep looking. The Bible also says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). Searching is never wasted.

Apply it today: Read the first chapter of the Gospel of John today and ask God, in your own words, to help you know Him.
