Common questions about Romans 10:9

What does it mean to say "Jesus is Lord"?

In Bible times, "lord" meant the one in charge, like a king or master. Saying Jesus is Lord means you believe He is God's Son and that He has the right to lead your life. The first Christians said this when the Roman emperor demanded that people call him lord, and it was a brave thing to say. It doesn't mean you must be perfect first. It means you choose to trust Jesus and follow Him, and He helps you from there. [[Philippians 2:9-11]]

Apply it today: Name one part of your life you want to trust Jesus with today.

Saved from what?

The Bible says everyone has done wrong and fallen short of God's goodness. That wrong, called sin, puts a gap between us and God. To be saved means to be rescued from that gap: forgiven, made new, and welcomed into God's family. It also means being rescued from the judgment that is coming. Jesus died in our place and rose again, so the rescue is real. No one earns it by being good enough. It is God's gift, received by trusting Jesus. [[Romans 3:23]] [[Ephesians 2:8-9]]

Apply it today: Read Ephesians 2:8-9 slowly and notice who does the saving.

Is it really that simple? What if I have doubts?

The verse is simple, but it isn't magic words. To believe "in your heart" means to truly trust, not to feel sure every minute. Many people who follow Jesus still have questions. In the Bible, a father told Jesus, "I believe; help my unbelief," and Jesus did not turn him away. Start with what you do believe, however small, and be honest about the rest. Jesus welcomes honest people. [[Mark 9:23-24]]

Apply it today: Tell Jesus in your own words what you believe about Him, even if it feels small.
