Common questions about John 6:35

What does "bread of life" mean?

Bread was the main food in Jesus' day. It kept people alive, and they ate it every day. When Jesus calls Himself the bread of life, He means He is what keeps our deepest self alive. The day before, He had fed thousands of people with a few loaves and some fish. Now He says He offers something even better than a meal. Food fills the body for a few hours. Jesus gives a life that lasts, a life joined to God. You can read the whole conversation in [[John 6:30-35]].

Apply it today: Read John 6:30-35 slowly and notice what the crowd asked for and what Jesus offered.

Does this mean I will never feel hungry or thirsty again?

Not in the way we feel hunger at lunchtime. Jesus knew people need real food, and He fed hungry crowds Himself. Here He is talking about a deeper hunger: the longing for meaning, forgiveness, belonging, and peace with God. Many things promise to fill that, like success, praise, or money, but the hunger keeps coming back. Jesus says He can satisfy it. Following Him does not mean you stop enjoying good things. It means your deepest need is met in Him, and everything else can be enjoyed as a gift. See [[Psalm 107:9]].

Apply it today: Name one thing you keep turning to for satisfaction, and tell Jesus honestly how it leaves you.

What does it mean to come to Jesus and believe in Him?

To come to Jesus means to turn toward Him and trust Him, like walking up to someone who can help. To believe in Him means to trust that He is who He says He is: God's Son, who died for our sins and rose again. You do not have to be good enough first. You can talk to Him in plain words, tell Him the truth about your life, and ask for His help. A few verses later, Jesus says He will not turn away anyone who comes to Him. See [[John 6:36-40]].

Apply it today: Say a short, honest prayer today telling Jesus you want to come to Him.
