Do atheists go to heaven?

Maybe someone you love doesn’t believe in God and you’re worried about them. Maybe you don’t believe, and you want to know what Christians actually say. Here is an honest answer.

The short answer

The Bible teaches that eternal life is found only through Jesus: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). A person who rejects God to the end remains separated from Him. But no one is beyond reach while they’re alive. God “wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4), and many former atheists have come to faith. If that’s you, the door is open today.

Someone who’s been here

Nicodemus came at night with questions

Nicodemus was a respected religious teacher who came to Jesus at night, probably so no one would see him, full of questions. Jesus didn’t send him away. He explained that he must be born again, and told him the most famous words in Scripture: “For God so loved the world…” (John 3:1–16). Later Nicodemus helped bury Jesus’ body (John 19:39). His questions led him to faith.

Why it matters

Heaven isn’t a reward for good people; it is life with God. Someone who wants nothing to do with God isn’t being kept out of something they want. Hell, at its core, is getting what they chose: life without Him (2 Thessalonians 1:9).

If you love someone who doesn’t believe

Pray for them consistently. Love them without conditions. Answer their questions honestly. Let your life speak. Many people come to faith years after the first conversation.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    The only way.

“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

    John 14:6
  2. 02

    Believe and live.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”

    John 3:16–18
  3. 03

God wants all to be saved.

“This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

    1 Timothy 2:3–4
  4. 04

Patient, not wanting any to perish.

“The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.”

    2 Peter 3:9
  5. 05

    Confess and believe.

“that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

    Romans 10:9
  6. 06

    No other name.

“Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.””

    Acts 4:12

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

If you are not a believer, pray honestly: “God, if You are real, show me.” If you love someone who isn’t, pray for them by name every day this month.

Common questions

Isn’t it unfair to send good people to hell?

No one is good enough on their own (Romans 3:23). That is why God offers forgiveness as a gift through Jesus, to everyone, including atheists.

What if someone never heard about Jesus?

God is perfectly just and sees every heart (Romans 2:14–16). For those who have heard, the answer is to respond to Jesus.

Can an atheist become a Christian?

Yes. Many have. God meets honest seekers (Jeremiah 29:13).
