Do Muslims go to heaven?

Maybe you have Muslim family, friends or coworkers who are devout, kind and sincere, and you wonder what happens to them. It’s a question that deserves love and honesty.

The short answer

The Bible teaches that salvation is found only through Jesus Christ: “there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Sincerity and good deeds, however real, cannot pay for sin; only Jesus’ death and resurrection can. That is true for Muslims, Christians-in-name and everyone else. We say this with respect and love, because the same offer of grace is open to every Muslim, and many Muslims around the world are coming to faith in Jesus today.

Someone who’s been here

Cornelius was devout, and God sent him the gospel

Cornelius was a Roman officer who feared God, prayed constantly and gave generously to the poor. God noticed, and sent an angel to tell him to call for Peter, who would bring “a message by which you and all your household will be saved” (Acts 10:1–6; 11:14). His sincerity was real, and it led him to Jesus. God still meets sincere seekers and brings them to His Son.

Why Jesus is necessary

Every person has sinned (Romans 3:23), and good deeds can’t erase sin any more than a good act erases a crime. God provided the payment Himself: Jesus died in our place and rose again. That gift is received by faith, not earned (Ephesians 2:8–9).

How to love Muslim neighbors

Be a real friend. Ask about their faith and listen. Share what Jesus means to you without arguing. Pray for them. Many Muslims who come to faith in Jesus say they were first drawn by a Christian’s love, or by Jesus Himself in a dream.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    No other name.

“Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.””

    Acts 4:12
  2. 02

    The way to the Father.

“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

    John 14:6
  3. 03

A devout man God sought out.

“At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was called the Italian Regiment. He and all his household were devout and God-fearing. He gave generously to the people and prayed to God regularly. One day at about the ninth hour, he had a clear vision of an angel of God who came to him and said, “Cornelius!” Cornelius stared at him in fear and asked, “What is it, Lord?” The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have ascended as a memorial offering before God. Now send men to Joppa to call for a man named Simon who is called Peter. He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea. ””

    Acts 10:1–6
  4. 04

All have sinned; grace for all.

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

    Romans 3:23–24
  5. 05

    Whoever believes.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

    John 3:16
  6. 06

    Gentleness and respect.

“But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect,”

    1 Peter 3:15

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Pray by name for one Muslim friend or neighbor this week, and look for a way to show them kindness.

Common questions

Isn’t it arrogant to say only Jesus saves?

It would be if Christians invented it. Jesus Himself said it (John 14:6). We share it humbly, as beggars telling other beggars where to find bread.

Don’t Muslims believe in Jesus?

Muslims honor Jesus as a prophet, but not as God’s Son who died for sin and rose. Salvation comes through trusting Him as He truly is.

Can a Muslim become a Christian safely?

In some places it is dangerous. If that is you, be wise, and seek out trusted believers who can walk with you.
