Common questions about John 3:16

What does it mean to believe in Jesus?

Believing here is more than agreeing that Jesus was a real person. It means trusting Him, like trusting a chair to hold you when you sit down. You count on Jesus to save you, because He died for our sins and rose again. It also means turning away from going your own way. The Bible calls that turning "repenting." Salvation is a gift you receive by trusting, not a prize you win by being good. [[Ephesians 2:8-9]] says this plainly. Anyone can ask for this gift at any time.

Apply it today: Read John 3:14-18 slowly and notice what God sent Jesus to do.

What do "perish" and "eternal life" mean?

To perish means to be lost, cut off from God for good. The Bible is serious about that, and it says God's judgment is real. But John 3:16 puts the weight on the good news. Eternal life means life with God that never ends. It starts when someone trusts Jesus, because they begin to know God now. Jesus describes it in [[John 17:3]]. One day God will make all things new, and eternal life is life in that world with Him.

Apply it today: Ask yourself what you most want from life, then notice how "life with God that lasts" speaks to it.

Do I have to be good enough for God to love me?

No. Look at what the verse says: God gave His Son because He loved the world. He did not wait for people to clean up their lives first. [[Romans 5:8]] says God showed His love while we were still sinners, which means people who had gone wrong. Everyone is made in God's image, and everyone needs His help. You can't earn His love. You can only receive it. Trusting Jesus is how you take hold of the gift. After that, God helps you grow and change over time.

Apply it today: Thank God today, in your own words, for loving you before you did anything to earn it.
