Common questions about Romans 5:8

What does the word "sinners" mean here?

"Sinner" is a church word. It means a person who has turned away from God and gone their own way. That may sound harsh, but the Bible says it is true of every one of us, not just a few bad people. We all fall short of God's goodness. Paul uses this word on purpose. He wants us to see that God's love did not go to people who had earned it. It went to people who were far from Him. That is what makes it such good news. [[Romans 3:23]]

Apply it today: Pause for one minute and be honest with God about where you have gone your own way.

Why did Christ have to die for us?

Sin is serious. It breaks things: our friendship with God, our relationships with people, and our own hearts. The Bible says the payment for sin is death. Jesus never sinned, yet He took that payment on Himself, in our place. That is what "Christ died for us" means. It was not an accident or bad luck. He chose it because He loved us. And He rose from the dead, so death did not have the last word. [[Romans 6:23]]

Apply it today: Read the story of Jesus' death in one of the Gospels, such as Luke 23, and notice how He treats the people around Him.

Do I have to clean up my life before God will love me?

No. That is the whole point of this verse. God loved us while we were still sinners, before anyone had cleaned anything up. Jesus invites us to trust Him and to repent, which means to turn around and walk His way. Change then grows over time, with His help. But salvation, being made right with God, is received as a gift by trusting Jesus. It is never earned by being good enough. [[Ephesians 2:8-9]]

Apply it today: Thank God out loud for loving you as you are today, not as you hope to be someday.
