“But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—”
In plain words: Everyone who welcomed Jesus and trusted Him was given the right to become a child of God.
What John 1:12 means.
Becoming a child of God isn’t earned. It’s received, and the right comes with receiving Jesus.
Common questions about John 1:12
What does it mean to receive Jesus?
To receive someone is to welcome them in. Here, it means trusting Jesus. You believe He is God's Son, that He died for our wrongs and rose again, and you say yes to Him as your Savior and leader. The verse treats this as the same thing as believing in His name. It is not a special prayer formula or a test you must pass. It is turning to Jesus with open hands. You can read more about this in [[John 3:16]].
Apply it today: Read [[John 1:10-13]] slowly and notice who is welcomed and what they are given.
Can I earn my place as a child of God?
No. Just after this verse, John says these children are not born from human effort or human choice, but from God ([[John 1:13]]). Paul says the same: salvation is a gift, so no one can brag about earning it ([[Ephesians 2:8-9]]). Every person is made in God's image and loved by Him. But becoming His child happens when we receive what Jesus did for us. A gift can't be bought. It can only be taken with thankful hands.
Apply it today: Thank God today for one good thing you did not earn.
What changes when someone becomes a child of God?
A child of God belongs. You can talk to God as your Father at any time, with no special words. His Spirit lives in those who trust Jesus and reminds them that they are loved ([[Romans 8:15-16]]). It does not mean life has no hard days. It means you never face them as a stranger to God. And it is not a score you must keep up. Your place in His family rests on Jesus, not on how well you do today.
Apply it today: Say "Father" to God in your own words once today and tell Him what is on your mind.
Ask anything about it.
Every question gets a clear answer in seconds, and a way to live it today.
Live it today.
If you’ve never received Jesus, do it today. Tell Him you believe and you want Him as your Lord.
Pray it back.
Jesus, I receive You. Thank You for making me a child of God.
Carry it all day.
