Why did Jesus have to die?

If God is all-powerful and loving, why couldn’t He just forgive everyone? Why did it take something as brutal as the cross?

The short answer

Because sin has a real cost, and God is both perfectly just and perfectly loving. A just judge can’t just let crime slide; the penalty has to be paid. “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23), and “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Hebrews 9:22). God’s love found a way: He paid the penalty Himself. Jesus, who never sinned, took our place: “God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). In plain words: you owed a debt you could never pay, so Jesus paid it with His life.

Someone who’s been here

“God Himself will provide the lamb”

God told Abraham to take his son Isaac up a mountain to offer him as a sacrifice. On the way up, Isaac, carrying the wood, asked, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son” (Genesis 22:7–8). At the last moment, God stopped Abraham and provided a ram in Isaac’s place. Two thousand years later, on the same range of hills, God provided His own Son. John the Baptist pointed at Jesus and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).

Why God couldn’t just overlook sin

Imagine a judge who let a murderer walk out laughing because he “felt forgiving.” We would call that judge corrupt, not loving. God is holy and just, so sin must be paid for (Romans 3:25–26). The cross is where God’s justice and His love meet.

What His death did

It paid for your sin (Isaiah 53:5–6). It canceled the record of debt against you (Colossians 2:14). It opened the way to God: the curtain in the temple tore from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51). It defeated Satan’s power (Hebrews 2:14–15). And three days later, He rose, proving the payment was accepted (Romans 4:25).

What it means for you

“While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). He didn’t die for good people. He died for you, before you ever cleaned anything up.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Pierced for our transgressions.

“Surely He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows; yet we considered Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. We all like sheep have gone astray, each one has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid upon Him the iniquity of us all.”

    Isaiah 53:4–6
  2. 02

    He took our place.

“God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”

    2 Corinthians 5:21
  3. 03

    While we were still sinners.

“But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

    Romans 5:8
  4. 04

    The cost of forgiveness.

“According to the law, in fact, nearly everything must be purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”

    Hebrews 9:22
  5. 05

    The Lamb of God.

“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

    John 1:29
  6. 06

    The debt canceled.

“When you were dead in your trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our trespasses, having canceled the debt ascribed to us in the decrees that stood against us. He took it away, nailing it to the cross! And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”

    Colossians 2:13–15

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Read Isaiah 53 slowly today, written 700 years before the cross. Each time it says “we” or “our,” put your own name in.

Common questions

Did Jesus have to die, or did He choose to?

He chose to. “No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord” (John 10:18).

Who killed Jesus?

Roman soldiers carried it out and leaders demanded it, but He died for the sins of every one of us, and He gave His life willingly.

If Jesus paid for all sin, is everyone saved?

The payment is enough for everyone, but it must be received through faith (John 1:12).
