Common questions about John 14:6

What does "the way, the truth, and the life" mean?

Jesus said this the night before He died. His friends were worried and confused. One of them, Thomas, asked how they could know the way to where Jesus was going [[John 14:1-6]]. Jesus did not give directions. He pointed to Himself. He is the way, because He is how we reach God. He is the truth, because He shows us what God is really like. He is the life, because He gives life that never ends. Knowing God is not about following a map. It is about knowing a person.

Apply it today: Read John 14:1-6 slowly today and notice how Jesus comforts His worried friends.

Isn't that a narrow thing to say?

It sounds strong, and it is fair to ask. Jesus said it plainly, and the first Christians said the same [[Acts 4:12]]. But look at why. Our wrong choices put distance between us and God, and we cannot fix that on our own. Jesus died and rose again to close that distance. So the door is narrow, but it is open to anyone who comes. God is also fair and good. How He judges each person is His to decide, and we can trust Him with it.

Apply it today: Ask yourself honestly what you believe about Jesus, and write down one question you would like answered.

How do I come to Jesus?

You do not have to be good enough first. You can simply talk to Him in your own words. Tell Him you are sorry for the wrong you have done, and that you trust Him to forgive you and lead you. The Bible calls turning back to God "repenting," and trusting Jesus "faith." Jesus promised that He will never turn away anyone who comes to Him [[John 6:37]]. If you want to take that step, the "Say yes to Jesus" page can walk you through it gently.

Apply it today: Take one quiet minute to tell Jesus, in your own words, what is on your heart.
