What is the difference between Christianity and Islam?

Maybe you grew up Muslim and have questions about Jesus. Maybe you have Muslim friends and want to understand them. Either way, this deserves a respectful, honest answer.

The short answer

Christians and Muslims both believe in one God who created everything, both honor Jesus, and both believe in prophets, a final judgment and life after death. The core difference is who Jesus is. Islam teaches that Jesus (Isa) was a great prophet, born of a virgin, but not God’s Son and not crucified (Quran 4:157, 4:171). Christianity teaches that Jesus is the eternal Son of God, who died on the cross for our sins and rose again (John 1:1; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4). That changes how a person is saved: by grace through trusting Jesus, not by weighing good deeds against bad.

Paul spoke respectfully in Athens

When Paul arrived in Athens, a city full of temples to other gods, he didn’t attack the people. He walked their streets, read their poets, and began by noticing their spiritual hunger: “I see that in every way you are very religious.” Then he told them clearly about the God who made the world and raised Jesus from the dead (Acts 17:22–31). Respect and clarity can go together.

What we share

Belief in one Creator God. Respect for Abraham, Moses and many prophets. Belief that Jesus was born of the virgin Mary, worked miracles and will return. Belief in a day of judgment, heaven and hell, and in prayer, fasting and giving.

Where we differ

Who Jesus is: Islam honors Him as a prophet only; the Bible reveals Him as the Son of God (Matthew 16:16), and He claimed God’s own name (John 8:58).

The cross: Islam teaches Jesus was not crucified; the Bible makes His death and resurrection the center of faith (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).

How we are saved: Islam teaches deeds will be weighed; the Bible teaches salvation as a gift of grace through faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8–9).

God as Father: the Bible reveals God as a Father who can be known personally (Romans 8:15).

How we talk about it

With respect. Many Muslims love God deeply and live devoted lives. We share the good news of Jesus because we believe it is true and is for everyone, not to win an argument.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    The Word became flesh.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There came a man who was sent from God. His name was John. He came as a witness to testify about the Light, so that through him everyone might believe. He himself was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. The true Light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God— children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

    John 1:1–14
  2. 02

    Died and rose.

“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,”

    1 Corinthians 15:3–4
  3. 03

    The way to the Father.

“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

    John 14:6
  4. 04

    Saved by grace.

“For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.”

    Ephesians 2:8–9
  5. 05

Who do you say I am?

““But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.””

    Matthew 16:15–16
  6. 06

    With gentleness and respect.

“But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect,”

    1 Peter 3:15

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

If you are exploring, read the Gospel of John and ask God sincerely: “Show me who Jesus really is.”

Common questions

Do Christians and Muslims worship the same God?

Both believe in one Creator God, but understand Him very differently: Christians believe God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, revealed fully in Jesus. That difference is at the heart of the two faiths.

What does the Quran say about Jesus?

It calls Him the Messiah, born of a virgin, a worker of miracles and a prophet, but denies that He is God’s Son or was crucified.

Can a Muslim become a Christian?

Yes, anyone can follow Jesus. In some countries this is dangerous; if that is your situation, be wise and seek out trusted believers.
