Who is God?
Maybe God has always been a word you heard but never really understood. Maybe you picture someone distant and angry, or someone you can’t possibly know. The Bible paints a very different picture.
God is the eternal Creator of everything that exists, the One who has no beginning and no end. He revealed His name to Moses as “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14): He depends on nothing and no one. He is holy, just, all-powerful and everywhere present, and “God is love” (1 John 4:8). He is one God in three persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. And He is not distant. He made Himself known in Jesus so that you could know Him personally.

Moses asked God His name
Moses was tending sheep in the desert when a bush caught fire but didn’t burn up, and God spoke to him from it. When God sent him to rescue Israel, Moses asked the question you may be asking: who are You? What do I tell them Your name is? God answered, “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:1–14). The God who needs nothing chose to rescue a nation of slaves, and to tell a shepherd His name.
What God is like
He is Creator: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). He is holy, perfectly pure and good. He is just, and He will set everything right. He is love, and He proved it: “God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son” (John 3:16). He is everywhere: there is nowhere you can go where He is not (Psalm 139:7–10).
Father, Son and Holy Spirit
There is one God (Deuteronomy 6:4), who exists eternally as three persons. The Father sent the Son. The Son, Jesus, became human, died and rose for us. The Holy Spirit lives in everyone who believes. Jesus told His followers to baptize “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19): one name, three persons.
How you can know Him
Jesus said, “Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus. Read the Gospel of John and talk to God honestly.
What the Bible says
- 01
I AM WHO I AM.
“God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’””
Exodus 3:14 - 02
- 03
Holy, holy, holy.
“And they were calling out to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.””
Isaiah 6:3 - 04
Everywhere present.
“Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle by the farthest sea, even there Your hand will guide me; Your right hand will hold me fast.”
Psalm 139:7–10 - 05
Seeing Jesus is seeing the Father.
“Jesus replied, “Philip, I have been with you all this time, and still you do not know Me? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?”
John 14:9 - 06
Father, Son and Spirit.
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”
Matthew 28:19

Read John 1:1–18 today. Then say to God, in your own words: “I want to know who You really are.”
Common questions
Who created God?
No one. God is eternal; He never began to exist. Everything that begins has a cause, but God is the uncaused cause of everything else.
Is God a man?
God the Father is spirit (John 4:24), not a man. God the Son became fully human in Jesus. Scripture calls God “Father” because of His relationship to us, not because He has a body.
Can I really know God personally?
Yes. Jesus came so that you could know God: “this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent” (John 17:3).
