Does God speak through dreams?
You woke up from a dream you can’t shake. It felt too real, too specific, maybe even like a message. Was that God?
Yes, God can and does speak through dreams. He did it throughout the Bible, and He promised to keep doing it: “In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams” (Acts 2:17). But not every dream is from God. Many dreams come from our own minds, worries and memories, and some come from the enemy. Take a dream seriously, test it carefully, and never let a dream outrank the Bible.

Joseph woke up and moved
After the wise men left Bethlehem, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream: “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.” Joseph got up that same night and left (Matthew 2:13–14). Herod’s soldiers came soon after. One dream, obeyed immediately, saved the life of Jesus.
How to test a dream
Does it agree with Scripture? God never contradicts Himself.
Does it point you toward Jesus, holiness and love, or toward fear, pride or sin?
Does it bring peace, even if the message is serious?
Is it confirmed by God’s Word, prayer, wise believers or circumstances? “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses” (2 Corinthians 13:1).
“Test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1).
What to do with a dream
Write it down as soon as you wake. Pray about it, not obsess over it. Share it with a mature believer. Don’t make major decisions on a dream alone. And if a dream is dark or frightening, pray over it in Jesus’ name and let it go.
Dream meanings and dream dictionaries
Biblical dream interpretation came from God, not from symbol lists: Joseph said, “Don’t interpretations belong to God?” (Genesis 40:8). Be careful with books and websites that assign fixed meanings to every symbol.
What the Bible says
- 01
Dreams in the last days.
“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.”
Acts 2:17 - 02
Joseph’s dream.
“When the Magi had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up!” he said. “Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.” So he got up, took the Child and His mother by night, and withdrew to Egypt,”
Matthew 2:13–14 - 03
God speaks in dreams.
“For God speaks in one way and in another, yet no one notices. In a dream, in a vision in the night, when deep sleep falls upon men as they slumber on their beds, He opens their ears and terrifies them with warnings”
Job 33:14–16 - 04
Interpretations belong to God.
““We both had dreams,” they replied, “but there is no one to interpret them.” Then Joseph said to them, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.””
Genesis 40:8 - 05
Test the spirits.
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
1 John 4:1 - 06
Speak My word faithfully.
“Let the prophet who has a dream retell it, but let him who has My word speak it truthfully. For what is straw compared to grain?” declares the LORD.”
Jeremiah 23:28
Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.
Keep a notebook by your bed. When a dream stays with you, write it down, pray over it, and bring it to someone you trust before acting on it.
Common questions
Are nightmares from the devil?
Sometimes, but often they come from stress, trauma or what we watch. Pray before sleep and rest in God’s protection (Psalm 4:8).
Can God show me the future in a dream?
He did for Joseph, Daniel and others. Treat any such dream with humility and test it.
What if I dream about someone who died?
It is usually your heart grieving. It’s not a visit from the dead (Luke 16:26). Bring the grief to God.
