What is worship?

For many people, worship means the songs before the sermon. But the Bible says worship is something much bigger.

The short answer

Worship is giving God the honor He deserves, with your whole life. Singing is one beautiful part of it, but it is far more than music. “God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). Paul says offering your whole self to God, your body, your choices and your days, is “your spiritual service of worship” (Romans 12:1). Worship is what happens when you love God more than anything else, and your life shows it, on Sunday and on Monday.

Singing at midnight in a prison

Paul and Silas were beaten with rods and thrown into the inner cell of a prison in Philippi, their feet locked in stocks. At midnight, bloodied and chained, they were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. Suddenly a violent earthquake shook the prison, every door flew open and everyone’s chains came loose (Acts 16:22–26). Before the night was over, the jailer and his whole family believed.

Ways to worship

Singing and praise, out loud (Psalm 95:1–2). Prayer and thanksgiving. Giving (Philippians 4:18). Serving others (Hebrews 13:16). Obedience in everyday choices. Doing your work as for the Lord (Colossians 3:23).

Spirit and truth

Spirit: from the heart, with real love, not just going through the motions. Truth: according to who God really is, as revealed in Scripture. Both matter.

Worship when you don’t feel like it

Worship isn’t about how you feel; it’s about who God is. Sometimes it is a “sacrifice of praise” (Hebrews 13:15). Often the feelings follow.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Spirit and truth.

“But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him. God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.””

    John 4:23–24
  2. 02

    Your spiritual service of worship.

“Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.”

    Romans 12:1
  3. 03

    Come, let us worship.

“Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout to the Rock of our salvation! Let us enter His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him in song. For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods. In His hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to Him. The sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, the sheep under His care. Today, if you hear His voice,”

    Psalm 95:1–7
  4. 04

    Singing at midnight.

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly a strong earthquake shook the foundations of the prison. At once all the doors flew open and everyone’s chains came loose.”

    Acts 16:25–26
  5. 05

    A sacrifice of praise.

“Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips that confess His name. And do not neglect to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

    Hebrews 13:15–16
  6. 06

    Whatever you do.

“Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

    Colossians 3:16–17

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

Common questions

Do I have to sing to worship?

Singing is a big part of biblical worship, but worship is your whole life given to God.

Is it okay to raise my hands or kneel?

Yes. Scripture shows lifted hands, kneeling and bowing as worship (Psalm 134:2; Psalm 95:6).

Can I worship alone?

Yes, anytime. And worshiping with other believers is powerful too.

Know someone asking this?

Send it to them, put it on your Story, or save it to come back to.

You don’t have to carry this alone tonight.

The Watch is Become’s prayer room. It never closes, and believers around the world are praying in it right now. Come in and pray with them, or talk it through in your own words.
