What is the fruit of the Spirit?

Love, joy, peace, patience… you may know the list by heart. But some days you have more frustration than fruit. How does it actually grow?

The short answer

The fruit of the Spirit is the character of Jesus that the Holy Spirit grows in every believer: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22–23). Notice it says fruit, not fruits: it is one fruit with nine flavors, growing together. You can’t produce it by trying harder, just as an apple tree doesn’t strain to grow apples. Jesus said, “I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). In plain words: stay connected to Jesus, and the fruit comes.

The fig tree with leaves and no fruit

Jesus was hungry and saw a fig tree in leaf from a distance. When He reached it, it had nothing but leaves. He said, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again,” and the next morning it had withered from the roots (Mark 11:12–14, 20). It looked alive from far away. Up close, there was nothing to eat. God isn’t looking for leaves, a Christian look. He is looking for fruit.

The nine, in plain words

Love: putting others first, even when they don’t deserve it (1 Corinthians 13:4–7).

Joy: a deep gladness in God that circumstances can’t steal.

Peace: calm in your soul because you trust God.

Patience: staying steady with hard people and slow seasons.

Kindness: going out of your way to do good.

Goodness: doing what is right, even when no one’s watching.

Faithfulness: being someone people and God can count on.

Gentleness: strength under control.

Self-control: saying no to yourself when you need to.

How it grows

Stay in Jesus: prayer, His Word, worship (John 15:4). Walk by the Spirit day by day (Galatians 5:16, 25). Expect God to prune you through hard seasons; pruning is for more fruit, not less (John 15:2). And be patient. Fruit takes seasons, not minutes.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    The fruit.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit.”

    Galatians 5:22–25
  2. 02

    The vine and the branches.

““I am the true vine, and My Father is the keeper of the vineyard. He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, and every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes to make it even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers. Such branches are gathered up, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, proving yourselves to be My disciples.”

    John 15:1–8
  3. 03

    By their fruit.

“By their fruit you will recognize them. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.”

    Matthew 7:16–20
  4. 04

    Leaves and no fruit.

“The next day, when they had left Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if there was any fruit on it. But when He reached it, He found nothing on it except leaves, since it was not the season for figs. Then He said to the tree, “May no one ever eat of your fruit again.” And His disciples heard this statement.”

    Mark 11:12–14
  5. 05

    Put on love.

“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity.”

    Colossians 3:12–14
  6. 06

    Fruit in its season.

“He is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither, and who prospers in all he does.”

    Psalm 1:3

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Pick the one fruit you’re weakest in. Pray for it by name every morning this week, and watch for chances to practice it.

Common questions

What is the difference between the gifts and the fruit of the Spirit?

Gifts are what the Spirit does through you; fruit is who He makes you. Gifts without fruit can do damage.

Can a Christian lack some fruit?

It may be young or small, but where the Spirit lives, fruit is growing. Keep abiding.

Is self-control really a fruit of the Spirit?

Yes. It’s the last one listed, and it’s the Spirit’s strength, not just your willpower.
