How do you hear God’s voice?
You pray, but it feels like you’re talking to the ceiling. Other people say “God told me,” and you wonder why He doesn’t talk to you.
God still speaks, and if you belong to Jesus, you can hear Him: “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). God speaks first and clearest through the Bible. He also speaks by His Holy Spirit in your heart, often as a quiet inner nudge or a thought that lines up with Scripture, and through wise believers and circumstances. In plain words: His voice is usually not loud. It is more like a still, small voice (1 Kings 19:12). And He will never tell you anything that goes against His Word.

Samuel thought it was Eli
Young Samuel was sleeping in the temple when he heard someone call his name. He ran to Eli the priest: “Here I am.” Eli said he hadn’t called. It happened three times. Then Eli realized it was the LORD and told Samuel to answer, “Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.” The next time God called, Samuel did, and God spoke to him (1 Samuel 3:1–10). Samuel didn’t recognize God’s voice at first. He had to learn it, with help.
How God speaks
Through the Bible: this is the main way, and the test for every other way (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
Through the Holy Spirit: peace, conviction, a verse that jumps off the page, a quiet thought (John 16:13; Romans 8:16).
Through other believers: counsel, preaching, prophecy that is tested (Proverbs 11:14; 1 Corinthians 14:29).
Through circumstances: open and closed doors (Acts 16:6–10).
How to know it’s Him
Does it agree with Scripture? Does it sound like Jesus? Does it lead you toward holiness and love? Does it bring peace, even if it’s hard? Do mature believers confirm it? “Test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1).
How to start listening
Read a short passage of Scripture slowly. Ask God, “What are You saying to me?” Sit in quiet for a few minutes. Write down what comes. Then do the last thing He clearly told you. Obedience sharpens hearing.
What the Bible says

Speak, LORD.
“And the boy Samuel ministered to the LORD before Eli. Now in those days the word of the LORD was rare, and visions were scarce. And at that time Eli, whose eyesight had grown so dim that he could not see, was lying in his room. Before the lamp of God had gone out, Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was located. Then the LORD called to Samuel, and he answered, “Here I am.” He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “I did not call,” Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down. Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “My son, I did not call,” Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, because the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. Once again, for the third time, the LORD called to Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” Then Eli realized that it was the LORD who was calling the boy. “Go and lie down,” he said to Samuel, “and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.””
1 Samuel 3:1–10 - 03
A still, small voice.
“Then the LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD. Behold, the LORD is about to pass by.” And a great and mighty wind tore into the mountains and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a still, small voice. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?””
1 Kings 19:11–13 - 04
This is the way.
“And whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: “This is the way. Walk in it.””
Isaiah 30:21 - 05
The Spirit guides.
“However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.”
John 16:13 - 06
Test the spirits.
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
1 John 4:1
Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.
Tomorrow morning, before your phone, read one chapter of John. Ask, “Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening,” and write down one sentence.
Common questions
Does God speak out loud?
He has, and He can. But most often He speaks through His Word and the Spirit’s quiet leading.
What if I think God told me something that goes against the Bible?
Then it wasn’t God. He never contradicts His Word.
Why can’t I hear Him?
Sometimes noise, sin or busyness drowns Him out. Slow down, get in the Word, and keep listening.
