Is lying a sin? What about white lies?

A little exaggeration, a “sure, I’ll be there,” a “nothing’s wrong.” Everybody does it. Does God really care about small lies?

The short answer

Yes. Lying is a sin, including small and “white” lies. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” (Exodus 20:16), and “Lying lips are detestable to the LORD, but those who deal faithfully are His delight” (Proverbs 12:22). God cares about truth because He is truth (John 14:6), and Satan is “a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44). In plain words: every lie, even a small one, is a little agreement with the enemy’s way of doing things. And trust, once lost, is hard to rebuild.

Ananias and Sapphira

In the early church, people were selling land and giving the money to the apostles. Ananias and his wife Sapphira sold a field and kept part of the money for themselves, which was fine, but they pretended they were giving all of it. Peter said, “You have not lied to men, but to God” (Acts 5:1–11). They both died that day. They didn’t have to give everything. They just had to tell the truth.

Kinds of lies we tell

White lies to avoid awkwardness. Exaggeration to look better. Half-truths that leave out what matters. Excuses that cover for us. Lies to ourselves about our own sin (1 John 1:8). All of them shade the truth.

What about Rahab?

Rahab lied to protect the Israelite spies, and she is honored for her faith (Hebrews 11:31). Scripture honors her faith, not the lie. Situations where lives are at stake are rare; most of our lies protect our comfort, not someone’s life.

How to stop lying

Catch yourself and correct it on the spot: “Actually, that’s not quite true.” Ask why you lied: fear, image, avoiding conflict? Practice kind honesty: “speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15). And confess the lies you’ve told.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Lying lips.

“Lying lips are detestable to the LORD, but those who deal faithfully are His delight.”

    Proverbs 12:22
  2. 02

    Speak the truth in love.

    Ephesians 4:15, 25
  3. 03

    False witness.

“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

    Exodus 20:16
  4. 04

    The father of lies.

“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies.”

    John 8:44
  5. 05

Do not lie to one another.

“Do not lie to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices, and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”

    Colossians 3:9–10
  6. 06

    Ananias and Sapphira.

“Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge, he kept back some of the proceeds for himself, but brought a portion and laid it at the apostles’ feet. Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and withhold some of the proceeds from the land? Did it not belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? How could you conceive such a deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God!” On hearing these words, Ananias fell down and died. And great fear came over all who heard what had happened. Then the young men stepped forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him. About three hours later his wife also came in, unaware of what had happened. “Tell me,” said Peter, “is this the price you and your husband got for the land?” “Yes,” she answered, “that is the price.” “How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord?” Peter replied. “Look, the feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.” At that instant she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. And great fear came over the whole church and all who heard about these events.”

    Acts 5:1–11

Common questions

Is exaggerating a lie?

If it gives a false picture on purpose, yes. Let your words be accurate.

Is it a lie to keep a surprise party secret?

Keeping something private isn’t the same as deceiving. Saying nothing is different from saying something false.

Will God forgive me for lying?

Yes. Confess it, make it right where you can, and let Him make you a truthful person.
