Is smoking weed a sin?
It’s legal in a lot of places now, and plenty of people say it’s no worse than a drink. Is smoking weed really a sin?
Yes. Getting high is a sin, for the same reason getting drunk is: God tells us to stay sober-minded and in control. “Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless indiscretion. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). Weed is made to alter your mind, and Scripture wants your mind clear and filled with the Holy Spirit, not with a substance. Being legal doesn’t make it right. In plain words: if the point is to get high, it’s not God’s will for you.

Noah after the flood
Noah was the man who walked with God and built the ark. After the flood, he planted a vineyard, drank the wine, got drunk, and lay uncovered in his tent. His son Ham saw him and mocked him, and it brought shame and a curse on his family (Genesis 9:20–25). One of the most faithful men in the Bible lost control for one night, and his family paid for it. A clear mind protects the people around you too.
What about vaping and cigarettes?
Nicotine doesn’t get you high the way weed does, but it is one of the most addictive substances there is, and it damages the body God gave you. “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:19), and “I will not be mastered by anything” (1 Corinthians 6:12). Smoking a cigarette won’t send you to hell, but God wants you unchained from every habit that controls you. If you smoke or vape, ask Him to help you quit.
What about medical marijuana?
Medicine prescribed by a doctor to treat a real condition, used as directed, is different from smoking to get high. Talk honestly with your doctor about other options, and be honest with yourself about your motives.
If you’re trying to quit
Tell someone. Change the places and people connected to the habit. Replace it with something: prayer, a walk, a call. And when you slip, get back up. Jesus can break any chain (John 8:36).

If you smoke weed, vape or smoke cigarettes, tell one person this week that you want to quit, and ask them to check on you.
Common questions
Is weed a sin if it’s legal in my state?
Yes. Being legal doesn’t change God’s call to stay sober-minded. Where it’s illegal, it’s also breaking the law (Romans 13:1).
Is weed worse than alcohol?
Drinking isn’t a sin, but getting drunk is. With weed, getting high is usually the whole point.
Can I still go to heaven if I smoke?
Salvation is through faith in Jesus. But if you belong to Him, He will lead you to let go of what controls you.
