What does the Bible say about cheating in a marriage?

Maybe you just found out. Or maybe you’re the one who cheated, and the guilt is crushing you. Either way, your world just broke.

The short answer

Adultery is a serious sin against God, your spouse and your own body (Exodus 20:14; 1 Corinthians 6:18). It breaks the covenant of marriage, and Scripture allows the faithful spouse to end the marriage because of it (Matthew 19:9). But it is not the unforgivable sin, and it doesn’t have to be the end of the story. Many marriages, with real repentance and hard work, are rebuilt stronger. Forgiveness is required of every believer; reconciliation is possible, but it takes repentance and rebuilt trust.

Someone who’s been here

“You are the man!”

King David slept with Bathsheba and arranged her husband’s death to cover it up. He thought he had gotten away with it. Then the prophet Nathan told him a story about a rich man who stole a poor man’s only lamb, and David burned with anger. Nathan looked at him and said, “You are the man!” David didn’t make excuses. He said, “I have sinned against the LORD” (2 Samuel 12:1–13), and wrote Psalm 51. He faced real consequences, and he was also truly forgiven.

If your spouse cheated

Get safe and get support. You don’t have to decide everything today. Forgiveness means releasing the debt to God; it doesn’t mean pretending it didn’t happen or trusting again overnight. Scripture permits divorce for adultery, and reconciliation is also possible when there is real repentance. Seek a pastor and a Christian counselor before making final decisions.

If you cheated

End the affair completely. Confess to God and, with wise counsel, to your spouse. Don’t minimize, blame or rush them. Accept the consequences, be fully transparent, and let trust be rebuilt over time. True repentance shows in changed behavior (Matthew 3:8).

Rebuilding

It takes both people, honest counseling, time, and God at the center. Hosea’s story shows that God’s own love keeps pursuing even unfaithful people (Hosea 3:1).

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Do not commit adultery.

    “You shall not commit adultery.”

    Exodus 20:14
  2. 02

    The exception.

“Now I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery. ””

    Matthew 19:9
  3. 03

    Nathan and David.

“Then the LORD sent Nathan to David, and when he arrived, he said, “There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had a great number of sheep and cattle, but the poor man had nothing except one small ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food and drank from his cup; it slept in his arms and was like a daughter to him. Now a traveler came to the rich man, who refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for his guest.” David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan: “As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die! Because he has done this thing and has shown no pity, he must pay for the lamb four times over.” Then Nathan said to David, “You are that man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave your master’s house to you and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah, and if that was not enough, I would have given you even more. Why then have you despised the command of the LORD by doing evil in His sight? You put Uriah the Hittite to the sword and took his wife as your own. You have slain him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’ This is what the LORD says: ‘I will raise up adversity against you from your own house. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to another, and he will lie with them in broad daylight. You have acted in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.’” Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” “The LORD has taken away your sin,” Nathan replied. “You will not die.”

    2 Samuel 12:1–13

    Hebrews 13:4
  6. 06

Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

“Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

    Colossians 3:13
