What does the Bible say about sex in marriage?
Church often talks about sex only as something to avoid. But if you’re married, or about to be, you want to know what God actually says it’s for.
Sex is God’s idea, and within marriage, He calls it good. He designed it to unite a husband and wife as “one flesh” (Genesis 2:24), to bring joy and closeness, and to bring children into the world. A whole book of the Bible, the Song of Songs, celebrates married love. Scripture tells husbands and wives to give themselves to each other and not to withhold intimacy except by mutual agreement for a time of prayer (1 Corinthians 7:3–5). Within marriage, sex is not shameful. It is a gift to enjoy, protect and give generously.

Isaac was comforted
Abraham’s servant traveled hundreds of miles to find a wife for Isaac, and found Rebekah at a well. When she arrived, Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, “so she became his wife, and he loved her. And Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death” (Genesis 24:67). Marriage, as God designed it, is comfort, companionship and love, and intimacy is part of how God knits two lives together.
What Scripture says
It is good and holy within marriage (Hebrews 13:4). It is mutual: “the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does” (1 Corinthians 7:4). It is meant for delight: “may you rejoice in the wife of your youth” (Proverbs 5:18). It is exclusive: only between husband and wife.
Keeping intimacy strong
Talk honestly about it. Serve each other, not just yourselves. Deal with conflict quickly; resentment kills intimacy. Protect your marriage from pornography and outside temptation. Get help if there is pain, trauma or a long dry season.
What it never means
Mutual giving never means coercion. Love is patient and kind (1 Corinthians 13:4–5). Pressure, force or abuse is never God’s design.
What the Bible says
- 01
One flesh.
“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.”
Genesis 2:24–25 - 02
Do not deprive each other.
“The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife. Do not deprive each other, except by mutual consent and for a time, so you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again, so that Satan will not tempt you through your lack of self-control.”
1 Corinthians 7:3–5 - 03
The marriage bed honored.
“Marriage should be honored by all and the marriage bed kept undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.”
Hebrews 13:4 - 04
Rejoice in the wife of your youth.
“Drink water from your own cistern, and running water from your own well. Why should your springs flow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth: A loving doe, a graceful fawn— may her breasts satisfy you always; may you be captivated by her love forever.”
Proverbs 5:15–19 - 05
Married love celebrated.
“How beautiful you are, my darling— how very beautiful! Your eyes are like doves behind your veil. Your hair is like a flock of goats streaming down Mount Gilead. Your teeth are like a flock of newly shorn sheep coming up from the washing; each has its twin, and not one of them is lost. Your lips are like a scarlet ribbon, and your mouth is lovely. Your brow behind your veil is like a slice of pomegranate. Your neck is like the tower of David, built with rows of stones; on it hang a thousand shields, all of them shields of warriors. Your breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle grazing among the lilies. Before the day breaks and the shadows flee, I will make my way to the mountain of myrrh and to the hill of frankincense. You are altogether beautiful, my darling; in you there is no flaw.”
Song of Songs 4:1–7 - 06
Love like Christ.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to Himself as a glorious church, without stain or wrinkle or any such blemish, but holy and blameless. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. Indeed, no one ever hated his own body, but he nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church. For we are members of His body. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ and the church. Nevertheless, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”
Ephesians 5:25–33
Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.
