What does the Bible say about marriage?

Maybe you’re married, engaged, hoping to be, or just wondering why the Bible makes marriage such a big deal. Here is God’s design, in plain words.

The short answer

Marriage is God’s idea. He designed it from the beginning as a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman: “a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). It is more than a contract: it is a covenant made before God. And it points to something bigger: the love between Jesus and His church (Ephesians 5:31–32). Husbands are to love their wives the way Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her; wives are to respect their husbands and follow their loving lead (Ephesians 5:22–33). In plain words: marriage is two people laying down their lives for each other, with God at the center.

The first wedding

God put Adam in a perfect garden and gave him meaningful work, and still said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.” He caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep, took one of his ribs, made a woman and brought her to the man. Adam’s first recorded words were a poem: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh” (Genesis 2:18–23). God Himself officiated the first wedding.

What husbands and wives owe each other

Love that gives itself up (Ephesians 5:25). Respect (Ephesians 5:33). Faithfulness, in body and heart (Hebrews 13:4). Physical intimacy, not withheld (1 Corinthians 7:3–5). Understanding and honor (1 Peter 3:7). Forgiveness, again and again (Colossians 3:13).

What “submit” does and doesn’t mean

Paul tells all believers to submit to one another (Ephesians 5:21), then asks wives to follow their husbands’ lead and husbands to love like Jesus, who died for His bride. It never means a wife must obey abuse or sin. A husband who loves like Christ is easy to follow.

Keeping God at the center

Pray together, even for one minute. Go to church together. Deal with conflict the same day (Ephesians 4:26). Get help early when you need it. “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12).

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    The first marriage.

“The LORD God also said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.” And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and He brought them to the man to see what he would name each one. And whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he slept, He took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the area with flesh. And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man, He made a woman and brought her to him. And the man said: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for out of man she was taken.” For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.”

    Genesis 2:18–24
  2. 02

    Christ and the church.

“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to Himself as a glorious church, without stain or wrinkle or any such blemish, but holy and blameless. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. Indeed, no one ever hated his own body, but he nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church. For we are members of His body. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ and the church. Nevertheless, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”

    Ephesians 5:21–33
  3. 03

    What God has joined.

“Jesus answered, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’ ? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.””

    Matthew 19:4–6
  4. 04

    Love is patient.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs. Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

    1 Corinthians 13:4–7
  5. 05

    Marriage honored.

“Marriage should be honored by all and the marriage bed kept undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.”

    Hebrews 13:4
  6. 06

    A cord of three strands.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. For if one falls down, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to help him up! Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And though one may be overpowered, two can resist. Moreover, a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

    Ecclesiastes 4:9–12

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

If you’re married, ask your spouse tonight: “What is one thing I could do this week to love you better?” Then do it.

Common questions

Is living together before marriage a sin?

Sex belongs inside marriage (Hebrews 13:4). Living together in a sexual relationship outside marriage is outside God’s design.

Is a courthouse wedding a real marriage?

Yes. Marriage is a covenant before God and witnesses, not a ceremony style.

Should I marry someone who isn’t a Christian?

No. Scripture says to marry “in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 7:39).
