Can a Christian date a non-believer?

Maybe you’ve met someone who treats you better than anyone in church ever has. They’re kind, they’re open, they just don’t believe yet. Or they say they believe in God, but they’re out partying, they don’t pray, and they want to sleep together. Is that really a problem?

The short answer

No. A Christian should not date or marry someone who doesn’t belong to Jesus. “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership can righteousness have with wickedness? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14). In plain words: a yoke is the wooden beam that joins two oxen to pull together. If one is pulling toward God and the other isn’t, the plow goes in circles. Dating is how marriages start, and Scripture says a believer is to marry “in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 7:39). This is God protecting your heart, not punishing it.

Someone who’s been here

The wisest man who ever lived

God gave Solomon more wisdom than anyone. But Solomon loved many foreign women from nations God had warned about, and “as Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods” (1 Kings 11:1–4). He built altars to their idols. If the wisest man in history couldn’t keep his heart while joined to people who didn’t love God, the warning is for all of us.

Who counts as a non-believer?

It isn’t only someone who says they don’t believe in God. Believing God exists is not the same as belonging to Jesus: “You believe that God is one. Good for you! Even the demons believe that—and shudder” (James 2:19).

Someone who calls themselves a Christian but lives in sin, with no desire to change, is not someone to build your life with. Paul wrote, “I am writing you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a verbal abuser, a drunkard or a swindler” (1 Corinthians 5:11). In plain words: saying “I believe in God” while living like He doesn’t exist is not walking with Him.

But no one is perfect. “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves” (1 John 1:8). The difference is this: a believer stumbles, hates it, repents and gets back up. A non-believer lives in it, is comfortable in it, and defends it. You’re not looking for someone who never sins. You’re looking for someone who is fighting it, with God.

How to tell: look at the fruit

Jesus said, “By their fruit you will recognize them” (Matthew 7:16). Ask honestly:

Do they love Jesus, and talk about Him on their own? Do they pray and read the Bible when no one is watching? Are they part of a church? When they’re wrong, do they repent? Do they respect your body and wait for marriage? And the biggest one: do they pull you closer to God, or further away?

If the answers are mostly no, they may believe in God, but they are not walking with Him yet. That is a yoke that will pull you off course.

Why it matters so much

The person you marry shapes your faith, your children and your future more than anyone. “Bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33). Most often the believer is pulled away, not the other way around.

“But I can change them”

Missionary dating rarely works, and it puts your heart in charge of something only God can do. If they come to Jesus, let it be because they want Him, not because they want you.

If you’re already in it

If you’re dating: pray, talk honestly, and be willing to step back. Your obedience may be the strongest witness they ever see. If you’re already married to an unbeliever: stay, love them well and pray for them. “The unbelieving husband is sanctified through his believing wife” (1 Corinthians 7:12–16; 1 Peter 3:1–2).

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Unequally yoked.

“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership can righteousness have with wickedness? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people.” “Therefore come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” And: “I will be a Father to you, and you will be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.””

    2 Corinthians 6:14–18
  2. 02

    Only in the Lord.

“A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, as long as he belongs to the Lord.”

    1 Corinthians 7:39
  3. 03

    Solomon’s heart.

“King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh—women of Moab, Ammon, Edom, and Sidon, as well as Hittite women. These women were from the nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, for surely they will turn your hearts after their gods.” Yet Solomon clung to these women in love. He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines—and his wives turned his heart away. For when Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and he was not wholeheartedly devoted to the LORD his God, as his father David had been.”

    1 Kings 11:1–4
  4. 04

    Even the demons believe.

“You believe that God is one. Good for you! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.”

    James 2:19
  5. 05

    By their fruit.

“Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.”

    Matthew 7:15–20
  6. 06

    If you’re already married.

“To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If a brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. And if a woman has an unbelieving husband and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his believing wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy. But if the unbeliever leaves, let him go. The believing brother or sister is not bound in such cases. God has called you to live in peace. How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?”

    1 Corinthians 7:12–16
  7. 07

    Guard your heart.

“Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.”

    Proverbs 4:23

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Write down the three things you need most in a spouse. Put “loves Jesus more than me” at the top, then pray over the list.

Common questions

What if they believe in God but don’t live like it?

Then they believe God exists, but they aren’t following Him yet. Look at the fruit (Matthew 7:16). Wait for someone who is walking with Jesus, not just agreeing He’s real.

What if they’re a Christian but backslidden?

Pray for them and encourage them, but don’t build a relationship on where you hope they’ll be. Let them get right with God first, for their sake and yours.

Can I date someone from another religion?

The same principle applies. Salvation is only through Jesus, and marriage should be built on Him.

What if I’m married to an unbeliever?

Stay faithful and love them. God can use your life to reach them (1 Peter 3:1).
