How to get over a breakup

It ended, and now there is a hole where they used to be. The texts you don’t send, the songs you skip, the future you had already pictured. Heartbreak is real grief. You are allowed to feel it.

The short answer

You get over a breakup by grieving it honestly instead of numbing it, cutting off the constant reminders, leaning on people who love you, and letting God heal what you can’t fix. It takes time, usually longer than you want. God promises He “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3), and He is close to you right now (Psalm 34:18).

Leah knew what it was to be unwanted

Leah married Jacob, but Jacob loved her sister Rachel. Year after year she hoped the next child would finally make him love her. Then, with her fourth son, something shifted. She named him Judah and said, “This time I will praise the LORD” (Genesis 29:31–35). She stopped waiting on a man’s love to define her and found it in God. And from Judah’s line came King David, and Jesus.

What helps this week

Feel it on purpose. Cry, journal, pray the hard prayers. Grief you push down comes back louder.

Cut the cord. Mute or unfollow for now. Checking their page reopens the wound every time.

Don’t go through it alone. Tell two people you trust what happened, and let them check on you.

Keep your body going. Sleep, eat, walk outside. Heartbreak hits your body too.

Don’t rush into someone new to fill the hole. Heal first.

What God wants to give you

A breakup can feel like rejection of who you are. God says your worth was settled before you ever met them: you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Ask Him what this season can teach you, and what He wants to build in you before the next relationship.

    A new thing.

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Tonight, mute or unfollow them, then tell one trusted person how you’re really doing. Read Psalm 147:3 before you sleep.

Common questions

How long does it take to get over a breakup?

It varies. Many people feel a real shift after a few months, sooner if they grieve it honestly and stop reopening the wound. Be patient with yourself.

Should I try to get back together?

Ask honestly why it ended. If the reasons haven’t changed, going back usually repeats the pain. Pray, and listen to people who love you and can see clearly.

Was it God’s will for us to break up?

God can use even painful endings to protect you and to grow you. Trust that He has not stopped writing your story.

Know someone asking this?

Send it to them, put it on your Story, or save it to come back to.
