Common questions about Psalm 139:14

What does 'fearfully and wonderfully made' mean?

Here, 'fearfully' means with awe, the kind of wonder you feel at something amazing. 'Wonderfully' means in a remarkable, set-apart way. David is thinking about how a human body is put together, and he is amazed. He says this is God's work and he praises God for it. The verse does not say you are perfect or have no struggles. It says you were made on purpose, with care, by a God whose works are marvelous. A few lines earlier, David says God formed him before he was born [[Psalm 139:13]].

Apply it today: Look at your hands for a moment and thank God for one thing they can do.

What if I don't like my body or how I look?

Many people feel that way, and it is a hard place to be. This verse says your body is God's design, worth honoring and not despising. That does not mean you must love every part of it today. It does mean the voice that calls you a mistake is not the voice of Scripture. Honoring your body can be simple: rest, eat well, move, and speak kindly about yourself. If the pain runs deep, talking with a doctor or counselor is a wise step. [[Psalm 139:13-16]] shows how carefully God watches over each life.

Apply it today: Say one kind and true thing about your body out loud today.

Is this verse for everyone, even if I'm not sure I believe in God?

Yes. The Bible teaches that every person is made in God's image, so every life has worth, whatever you believe right now [[Genesis 1:27]]. David wrote this verse as praise to God, because he saw his worth as coming from his Maker. You are welcome to read more and ask questions, and no one will push you. A good place to start is simply to wonder at how your body works, and to ask where such a wonder could come from.

Apply it today: Notice one amazing thing your body does today, like breathing or smiling, and say thank you.
