My pastor sinned. Should I leave my church?

Finding out that a pastor you trusted did something wrong can shake you to the core. You may feel betrayed, confused, or tempted to walk away from church, or from God, altogether.

The short answer

It depends on what happened and how it is handled. Every pastor is human and will stumble (James 3:2), and a leader who confesses and submits to correction can be restored. But serious, ongoing sin, abuse, false teaching, or a cover-up are reasons to leave, and abuse or crimes must be reported. Scripture calls leaders to a higher standard and says those who keep on sinning are to be corrected openly (1 Timothy 5:19–20). Whatever you decide, don’t let a person’s failure push you away from Jesus.

Paul confronted Peter to his face

Peter was one of the most respected leaders in the early church, and he got it badly wrong: in Antioch, he stopped eating with non-Jewish believers because he was afraid of what others would think, and other leaders followed him. Paul confronted him publicly because the truth of the gospel was at stake (Galatians 2:11–14). Even great leaders fall short. What matters is whether the truth is honored and the leader is corrected.

Questions to ask

Is it a personal failure that was confessed, or an ongoing pattern? Is anyone being harmed? Is the church dealing with it honestly, or covering it up? Is the teaching still faithful to Scripture?

When to stay

If a leader confessed, stepped back, submitted to accountability, and the church is handling it transparently, staying and praying for restoration can be right (Galatians 6:1).

When to go

If there is abuse of any kind, report it to the authorities and protect the vulnerable first. If sin is being covered up, if the leader refuses correction, or if the teaching has departed from Scripture, leave. Leave without gossip, and find a healthy community quickly.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Correcting leaders.

“Do not entertain an accusation against an elder, except on the testimony of two or three witnesses. But those who persist in sin should be rebuked in front of everyone, so that the others will stand in fear of sin.”

    1 Timothy 5:19–20
  2. 02

    Restoring gently.

“Brothers, if someone is caught in a trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him with a spirit of gentleness. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.”

    Galatians 6:1
  3. 03

    Teachers judged more strictly.

“Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to control his whole body.”

    James 3:1–2
  4. 04

    How to confront.

“If your brother sins against you, go and confront him privately. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, regard him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.”

    Matthew 18:15–17
  5. 05

Leaders who will give an account.

“Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you.”

    Hebrews 13:17
  6. 06

Don’t put your trust in princes.

“Put not your trust in princes, in mortal man, who cannot save.”

    Psalm 146:3

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Before you decide, write down what you know for sure, not rumors. Pray over it, and talk with one mature believer outside the situation.

Common questions

Should I confront my pastor?

If you witnessed the sin directly, Scripture calls you to go to them privately first, then with others if needed (Matthew 18:15–17). If it involves abuse or a crime, go to the authorities.

Can a pastor be restored after sinning?

Restoration to God is always possible through repentance. Restoration to leadership depends on the sin, the repentance shown and time.

I feel like giving up on church altogether.

That is understandable. But the church is Jesus’ family, and one leader’s failure isn’t His. Find a community where you can heal and grow.
