What does the Bible say about fear?

Fear of the future, fear of losing someone, fear of failing, fear of what’s happening in the world. It can wake you up at night. What does God say to it?

The short answer

God says “Do not fear” to His people again and again, and He always gives the reason: He is with you. “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). Fear itself is a human feeling, not a sin. What God wants is for you to bring it to Him and not let it rule you. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7). In plain words: courage isn’t the absence of fear; it is trusting God while you’re afraid.

Peter walked on the water, then looked down

In the middle of a storm, Jesus came walking on the water. Peter said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” Jesus said, “Come.” Peter stepped out and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and began to sink, and cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him (Matthew 14:25–31). As long as Peter looked at Jesus, he walked. When he looked at the storm, he sank. Even then, Jesus caught him.

What to do when fear hits

Name it to God honestly (Psalm 56:3: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You”). Speak His promises out loud. Ask: what is true right now, not what might happen? Do the next right thing. And stay close to people who will pray with you.

The one fear that is good

The Bible says “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). That isn’t terror; it is deep respect and awe for God. In plain words: when you fear God rightly, you don’t have to fear anything else.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    I am with you.

“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

    Isaiah 41:10
  2. 02

    Power, love and self-control.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.”

    2 Timothy 1:7
  3. 03

    I will fear no evil.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

    Psalm 23:4
  4. 04

    When I am afraid.

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”

    Psalm 56:3–4
  5. 05

    Lord, save me.

“During the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus spoke up at once: “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.” “Lord, if it is You,” Peter replied, “command me to come to You on the water.” “Come,” said Jesus. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold of Peter. “You of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?””

    Matthew 14:25–31
  6. 06

    Perfect love drives out fear.

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. The one who fears has not been perfected in love.”

    1 John 4:18

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

Common questions

Is fear a sin?

Feeling afraid isn’t a sin. Letting fear control you instead of trusting God is where it goes wrong.

How many times does the Bible say “do not fear”?

Dozens of times, in many forms: “do not fear,” “do not be afraid,” “take courage.” God says it a lot because we need it a lot.

What if my fear is about something real?

God doesn’t ask you to pretend. He asks you to trust Him in it (Psalm 46:1–2).
