What is the unforgivable sin?

If you are reading this late at night, afraid you have done something God will never forgive, take a breath. That fear is heavy, and a lot of sincere believers have felt it. Let’s look at what Jesus actually said.

The short answer

Jesus called it blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Mark 3:28–30). In context, religious leaders watched the Spirit of God work through Jesus and deliberately called it the work of the devil. It is a settled, hardened rejection of God, not a single bad thought, word or sin. And here is the good news: if you are worried you have committed it, that worry is itself a sign you haven’t. A heart that has truly rejected God does not grieve over losing Him.

Someone who’s been here

Peter thought he was too far gone

Peter swore he would never leave Jesus. Hours later he denied even knowing Him, three times, and then went out and wept bitterly (Luke 22:62). If anyone had reason to think he’d crossed a line, it was Peter. After the resurrection, Jesus came looking for him, cooked him breakfast on the beach, and gave him his calling back (John 21:9–17). That’s how Jesus treats people who are afraid they’ve gone too far.

What Jesus actually said

Jesus had just freed a man from a demon. The religious leaders could not deny the miracle, so they said He did it by the power of Satan (Mark 3:22). Jesus answered that every sin and every blasphemy can be forgiven, except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, “because they were saying, ‘He has an unclean spirit’” (Mark 3:30).

Notice the first half of His sentence: every sin can be forgiven. The warning was aimed at people who looked straight at God’s work and called it evil, and kept choosing that.

What the unforgivable sin is not

It is not a terrible thought that flashed through your mind. It is not something you said to God in anger or pain. It is not a sin you have repeated and keep fighting. It is not doubt. Peter denied Jesus three times and was restored (John 21:15–19). Paul persecuted the church and called himself the worst of sinners, and was forgiven (1 Timothy 1:15–16).

Why this fear hits so hard

Fear about the unforgivable sin often comes in loops: a thought you didn’t want, panic about it, checking and re-checking, and no peace. If that sounds like you, you are not alone, and it is often a form of anxiety rather than a message from God. Talking with a counselor who respects your faith can bring real relief, and that is not a lack of faith.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

What Jesus said, in His own words.

“Truly I tell you, the sons of men will be forgiven all sins and blasphemies, as many as they utter. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of eternal sin.””

    Mark 3:28–29
  2. 02

Whoever comes to Him, He will never turn away.

“Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never drive away.”

    John 6:37
  3. 03

    When you confess, He forgives.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

    1 John 1:9
  4. 04

There is no condemnation for those in Christ.

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

    Romans 8:1
  5. 05

Nothing can separate you from His love.

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

    Romans 8:38–39
  6. 06

How far He removes your sin.

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”

    Psalm 103:12

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Tonight, say this out loud: “Jesus, I want You. I’m sorry for my sin. I receive Your forgiveness, and I trust that You don’t turn away anyone who comes to You.” Then read John 6:37 and go to sleep on it.

Common questions

Can a Christian commit the unforgivable sin?

Someone who belongs to Christ and wants Him is not in the hardened, settled rejection Jesus described. The desire to be right with God is the work of the Holy Spirit in you, not His absence.

I cursed God when I was angry. Did I commit it?

No. Job, David and Jeremiah all said hard things to God in their pain, and God answered them with grace. Tell Him you’re sorry, and receive His forgiveness (1 John 1:9).

Is suicide the unforgivable sin?

No. The Bible never calls it that. If you are thinking about ending your life, please talk to someone right now: in the U.S. call or text 988, or contact your local emergency number.

How do I know I’m forgiven?

Not by a feeling but by a promise: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us” (1 John 1:9). Feelings come and go; His word stays.
