How do I share my faith with someone?

You want the people you love to know Jesus. But every time you think about bringing it up, you freeze. What if it gets awkward? What if they ask something you can’t answer?

The short answer

Sharing your faith is simply telling people what Jesus has done, starting with what He has done for you. You don’t need to win a debate or know every answer: “Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15). The Holy Spirit gives you the power (Acts 1:8), and He does the convincing (John 16:8). Your job is to be honest and loving; God’s job is to change hearts.

Someone who’s been here

She just told her town what happened

A Samaritan woman came to a well at noon, alone, and met Jesus. He knew everything about her life, and He offered her living water anyway. She left her water jar, ran back into town and said, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” Many in that town believed because of her story (John 4:28–30, 39). She had known Jesus for less than an hour. She didn’t give a sermon. She just told them what happened.

Tell your story in three parts

Before: what your life was like.

How: how you met Jesus.

After: what is different now.

Keep it to two minutes, honest and specific. A changed life is hard to argue with.

Simple ways to start

Pray for three people by name every day. Ask good questions: “Do you ever think about God?” Invite them to something: a church service, a Table, a Become live night. Offer to pray for them when they share a struggle. Share an Answers page that speaks to what they’re going through.

When they push back

Stay kind. Listen. It’s okay to say, “I don’t know, but I’ll find out.” Don’t take rejection personally; they’re not rejecting you. And keep loving them. Many people come to faith years after the first conversation.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Gentleness and respect.

“But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect,”

    1 Peter 3:15
  2. 02

    Come and see.

    John 4:28–30, 39
  3. 03

    Power to be witnesses.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.””

    Acts 1:8
  4. 04

    Not ashamed of the gospel.

“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, then to the Greek.”

    Romans 1:16
  5. 05

    Gracious speech.

“Act wisely toward outsiders, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”

    Colossians 4:5–6
  6. 06

    Go and make disciples.

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.””

    Matthew 28:18–20

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Write your before, how and after on one page. Then pray for one person by name this week, and look for a natural moment to share it.

Common questions

You know your story. Start there, and keep learning.

How do I share with family who know my past?

Let your changed life speak first, apologize where you need to, and be patient.

Is it wrong to share on social media?

No. It can reach people you’d never meet. Share with the same gentleness you would in person.

Know someone asking this?

Send it to them, put it on your Story, or save it to come back to.
