Can people in heaven see what’s happening on earth?

You may wonder if your mom, dad, grandparent or friend in heaven can see your life: your wedding, your kids, your struggles. It’s a tender question, and Scripture gives real glimpses.

The short answer

Believers in heaven are fully conscious and aware, and Scripture shows they know about at least some events on earth. Moses and Elijah spoke with Jesus about what He was about to accomplish in Jerusalem (Luke 9:30–31). Martyrs in heaven know that evil on earth hasn’t yet been judged (Revelation 6:9–10). Heaven rejoices when a sinner repents (Luke 15:10). The Bible doesn’t say our loved ones watch every moment of our lives, but they are alive, aware and with Jesus, and they are not grieving the way we are.

Someone who’s been here

Moses and Elijah knew what was coming

When Jesus was transfigured on the mountain, Moses and Elijah appeared with Him, and Luke tells us what they talked about: “They appeared in glory and spoke about His departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem” (Luke 9:30–31). Centuries after they left the earth, they knew exactly what was about to happen there.

What we can say

They are conscious: to be with Christ is “far better” (Philippians 1:23). They know some of what happens on earth (Luke 9:31; Revelation 6:10). They are part of a “great cloud of witnesses” whose faith encourages ours (Hebrews 12:1).

What we can’t say

Scripture doesn’t say they watch us constantly, hear our prayers, or act as guardian angels. People don’t become angels.

Don’t try to contact them

God forbids consulting the dead through mediums or séances (Deuteronomy 18:10–12; Isaiah 8:19). Talk to God instead. He knows your loved one, and He knows you.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Moses and Elijah knew.

“Suddenly two men, Moses and Elijah, began talking with Jesus. They appeared in glory and spoke about His departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.”

    Luke 9:30–31
  2. 02

    Aware of the earth.

“And when the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony they had upheld. And they cried out in a loud voice, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge those who dwell upon the earth and avenge our blood?””

    Revelation 6:9–10
  3. 03

    Joy in heaven.

“In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels over one sinner who repents.””

    Luke 15:10
  4. 04

    A great cloud of witnesses.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us.”

    Hebrews 12:1
  5. 05

    Far better.

“I am torn between the two. I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better indeed.”

    Philippians 1:23
  6. 06

    Consult God, not the dead.

“When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists who whisper and mutter, shouldn’t a people consult their God instead? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?”

    Isaiah 8:19

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Instead of talking to your loved one, talk to God about them today. Thank Him for them by name.

Common questions

Do our loved ones become angels?

No. Angels are a separate creation. People remain people.

Can they hear my prayers?

Scripture never directs prayer to anyone but God. Pray to Him.

Are they sad about what’s happening here?

They are in God’s presence, comforted (Luke 16:25). Whatever they know, they see it in the light of His goodness and His plan.
