How do I know God’s will for my life?
You’re standing at a crossroads: a job, a move, a relationship, a calling. You want to do what God wants, and you’re afraid of missing it.
Most of God’s will is already written down. The Bible tells you clearly that God wants you to be saved, to grow holy, to be thankful and to love people (1 Thessalonians 4:3; 5:18). When you are living in that, God guides the specific decisions too: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5–6). Stay close to God, obey what you already know, and He will make the next step clear. You don’t find God’s will by searching for a hidden map. You find it by walking with Him.

Gideon asked for a sign
God called Gideon, a frightened young farmer, to lead Israel against an army that had crushed them for years. Gideon wasn’t sure he had heard right. He laid a wool fleece on the threshing floor and asked God to make it wet with dew while the ground stayed dry. The next morning it was. Then he asked for the opposite, and God answered again (Judges 6:36–40). God was patient with an honest man who wanted to be sure. But Gideon already knew what God had said. The sign only gave him the courage to obey.
How God leads
Through His Word: God will never lead you against what He has already said (Psalm 119:105).
Through the Holy Spirit: an inner peace, or an unrest, as you pray (Colossians 3:15; Acts 16:6–7).
Through wise counsel: “plans succeed with many counselors” (Proverbs 15:22).
Through circumstances: doors He opens and doors He closes (Revelation 3:8).
A simple way to decide
1. Ask: does either option go against Scripture? If so, it’s not God’s will.
2. Pray about it for a set time, and fast if you can.
3. Ask two or three mature believers who know you.
4. Look at what doors are actually open.
5. Choose the path that gives you peace before God, and walk it with confidence. If you’re walking with Him, He can redirect you.
What the Bible says
- 01
He will make your paths straight.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:5–6 - 02
Test and approve His will.
“Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”
Romans 12:1–2 - 03
I will instruct you.
“I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will give you counsel and watch over you.”
Psalm 32:8 - 04
Ask for wisdom.
“Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”
James 1:5 - 05
God’s will for you.
“Rejoice at all times. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 - 06
Gideon’s fleece.
“Then Gideon said to God, “If You are going to save Israel by my hand, as You have said, then behold, I will place a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that You are going to save Israel by my hand, as You have said.” And that is what happened. When Gideon arose the next morning, he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew—a bowlful of water. Then Gideon said to God, “Do not be angry with me; let me speak one more time. Please allow me one more test with the fleece. This time let it be dry, and the ground covered with dew.” And that night God did so. Only the fleece was dry, and dew covered the ground.”
Judges 6:36–40

Common questions
What if I make the wrong choice?
If your heart is set on God, He can redirect you and work even your mistakes for good (Romans 8:28).
Is it okay to ask God for a sign?
God answered Gideon. Signs can confirm, but they don’t replace His Word, prayer and wise counsel.
Does God have one specific person for me to marry?
Scripture’s clearest guidance is to marry a believer you can build a godly life with (1 Corinthians 7:39). Within that, seek His wisdom.
