Is cremation a sin?
Maybe you’re planning a funeral, or thinking about your own. Funerals are expensive, and cremation costs far less. But is it okay with God?
No. Cremation is not a sin. The Bible never forbids it. Burial was the normal practice for God’s people, and Jesus Himself was buried, so burial is a beautiful picture of the resurrection, and families who choose it honor that. But God does not need a whole body to raise the dead. Believers lost at sea, burned in fires or buried thousands of years ago will all be raised: “the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed” (1 Corinthians 15:52). In plain words: the God who made Adam from dust can raise you from ashes.

A valley of dry bones
God brought the prophet Ezekiel to a valley full of bones, very dry, scattered everywhere. He asked, “Son of man, can these bones live?” Ezekiel said, “O Lord GOD, only You know.” God told him to speak to the bones. There was a rattling, the bones came together, tendons and flesh and skin covered them, and breath came into them. They stood up, a vast army (Ezekiel 37:1–10). Nothing is too far gone for the God who raises the dead.
Why burial was the pattern
Abraham bought a cave to bury Sarah (Genesis 23). Joseph asked that his bones be carried to the promised land (Genesis 50:25). Jesus was laid in a tomb (Matthew 27:59–60). Burial is like planting a seed, waiting for the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:42–44).
What matters most
Not what happens to the body after death, but where the person is. For a believer, to be “away from the body” is to be “at home with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8). The body is a shell; the person is already with Jesus.
Choosing for your family
Pray about it, think about cost, and choose in peace. Either way, make the service point to the hope of the resurrection.
What the Bible says
- 01
Raised imperishable.
1 Corinthians 15:42–44, 52 - 02
Dry bones.
“The hand of the LORD was upon me, and He brought me out by His Spirit and set me down in the middle of the valley, and it was full of bones. He led me all around among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, and indeed, they were very dry. Then He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones come to life?” “O Lord GOD,” I replied, “only You know.” And He said to me, “Prophesy concerning these bones and tell them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! This is what the Lord GOD says to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh grow upon you and cover you with skin. I will put breath within you so that you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’” So I prophesied as I had been commanded. And as I prophesied, there was suddenly a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to bone. As I looked on, tendons appeared on them, flesh grew, and skin covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and tell the breath that this is what the Lord GOD says: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, so that they may live!” So I prophesied as He had commanded me, and the breath entered them, and they came to life and stood on their feet—a vast army.”
Ezekiel 37:1–10 - 03
To dust you shall return.
“By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread, until you return to the ground— because out of it were you taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.””
Genesis 3:19 - 04
At home with the Lord.
“Therefore we are always confident, although we know that while we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, then, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”
2 Corinthians 5:6–8 - 05
All who are in the graves.
“Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.”
John 5:28–29 - 06
The dead in Christ will rise.
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise.”
1 Thessalonians 4:16

Common questions
Can a cremated person go to heaven?
Yes. Heaven depends on faith in Jesus, not on what happens to the body.
Is it wrong to keep ashes at home?
The Bible doesn’t say. Many families bury or scatter them; others keep them. Do what brings peace and honors the person.
Didn’t burning bodies happen as judgment in the Bible?
In a few cases, yes (Joshua 7:25). But those were judgments, not funerals, and Scripture never makes them a rule.
