What does the Bible say about jealousy and envy?
Their house, their marriage, their body, their success, their followers. Scrolling can leave you feeling like everyone has more than you. What does God say?
Envy, wanting what someone else has and resenting them for it, is a sin: “You shall not covet… anything that belongs to your neighbor” (Exodus 20:17). “A tranquil heart is life to the body, but envy rots the bones” (Proverbs 14:30). Envy says God has been unfair to you. The answer is contentment: trusting that God knows what you need. “I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances” (Philippians 4:11). In plain words: comparison steals your joy. Gratitude gives it back.

Saul couldn’t stand the song
After David killed Goliath, the women came out singing, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” Saul was furious: “They have ascribed tens of thousands to David, but only thousands to me.” “And from that day forward Saul kept a jealous eye on David” (1 Samuel 18:6–9). Envy turned a king into a man who tried to kill his most loyal servant, and it slowly cost him everything.
Why God calls Himself jealous
God says He is a jealous God (Exodus 34:14). That isn’t envy. It is the right, protective love of a husband for his wife: He won’t share His people with idols that will destroy them.
How to beat envy
Thank God for three specific things every day. Pray for the person you envy, and ask God to bless them more. Unfollow what feeds comparison. Remember you see their highlight reel, not their whole story. And remember your race is your own (John 21:21–22: “What is that to you? You follow Me!”).
What the Bible says

- 02
Do not covet.
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, or his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.””
Exodus 20:17 - 03
Content in all things.
“I am not saying this out of need, for I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances. I know how to live humbly, and I know how to abound. In any and every situation I have learned the secret of being filled and being hungry, of having plenty and having need. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”
Philippians 4:11–13 - 04
Where envy is.
“But if you harbor bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth. Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice.”
James 3:14–16 - 05
Saul’s jealous eye.
“As the troops were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs, and with tambourines and other instruments. And as the women danced, they sang out: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” And Saul was furious and resented this song. “They have ascribed tens of thousands to David,” he said, “but only thousands to me. What more can he have but the kingdom?” And from that day forward Saul kept a jealous eye on David.”
1 Samuel 18:6–9 - 06
You follow Me.
“Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them. He was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper to ask, “Lord, who is going to betray You?” When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you? You follow Me!””
John 21:20–22

Think of the person you most compare yourself to. Pray for them by name today, and ask God to bless them.
Common questions
Is it wrong to want what others have?
Wanting good things isn’t wrong. Resenting someone else for having them, or doubting God’s goodness to you, is.
What’s the difference between jealousy and envy?
People use them interchangeably. Envy wants what someone else has; jealousy often fears losing what you have.
Is social media making me envious?
It can feed it. If you leave the app feeling worse about your life, change how you use it.
