How do I resist temptation?

You know what you shouldn’t do. But in the moment, it’s like your willpower disappears. How do you actually say no?

The short answer

Temptation is not sin; giving in is. Jesus Himself was tempted in every way, yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15). God promises you are never trapped: “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it” (1 Corinthians 10:13). There is always a way out, and it is usually found early, before the temptation gets close.

Joseph ran

Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce Joseph day after day, and he refused: “So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?” One day, when no one else was in the house, she grabbed his cloak. Joseph didn’t stay to argue. He left the cloak in her hand and ran out of the house (Genesis 39:7–12). Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is leave.

How temptation works

“Each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is lured away and enticed. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin” (James 1:14–15). It starts with a thought, grows with attention, and becomes action. Stop it early.

How to resist

1. Know your triggers and avoid them (Romans 13:14).

2. Flee, like Joseph. Don’t negotiate (2 Timothy 2:22).

3. Fight with Scripture, like Jesus did (Matthew 4:1–11). Memorize a verse for your biggest struggle.

4. Pray before you’re in the moment: “Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation” (Matthew 26:41).

5. Have someone who checks on you (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10).

6. Replace, don’t just remove: fill the time and the craving with something good.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    An escape.

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.”

    1 Corinthians 10:13
  2. 02

    How temptation works.

“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him. When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is lured away and enticed. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”

    James 1:12–15
  3. 03

    Jesus was tempted.

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

    Hebrews 4:15–16
  4. 04

    Watch and pray.

““Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.””

    Matthew 26:41
  5. 05

    Joseph ran.

“and after some time his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph and said, “Sleep with me.” But he refused. “Look,” he said to his master’s wife, “with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has entrusted everything he owns to my care. No one in this house is greater than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?” Although Potiphar’s wife spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be near her. One day, however, Joseph went into the house to attend to his work, and not a single household servant was inside. She grabbed Joseph by his cloak and said, “Sleep with me!” But leaving his cloak in her hand, he escaped and ran outside.”

    Genesis 39:7–12
  6. 06

    Flee and pursue.

“Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, together with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

    2 Timothy 2:22

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

Common questions

Is being tempted a sin?

No. Jesus was tempted. Sin begins when we give in.

Does God tempt us?

No. God tests to strengthen, but He never tempts anyone to sin (James 1:13).

Why do I keep falling for the same thing?

Usually a trigger hasn’t been dealt with, or the fight is happening too late. Plan earlier, and get accountability.
