Is masturbation a sin?

This is a question a lot of people search alone, late at night, because they’re too embarrassed to ask anyone. You’re not the only one, and you won’t be shamed here.

The short answer

The Bible never names masturbation, but it speaks plainly about what almost always comes with it: lust. Jesus said, “anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). God made sex for marriage, between a husband and wife, to join two people together (Genesis 2:24). Masturbation turns that gift inward, usually feeds lust and often pornography, and that is why we teach it is not God’s design and something to turn from. But hear this: it is not the unforgivable sin, God is not disgusted with you, and you can break the habit.

David on the roof

One evening King David got up from his bed and walked on his roof, and he saw a woman bathing. He kept looking. That look turned into a question, the question into a message, and the message into adultery and then murder (2 Samuel 11:2–17). It started with one look he didn’t turn away from. Later, David wrote the prayer we still pray: “Create in me a clean heart, O God” (Psalm 51:10). He was forgiven, and he was restored.

Why it matters to God

Your body is not just yours: “your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit … You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20). And “it is God’s will that you should be holy … each of you must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor” (1 Thessalonians 4:3–4). In plain words: God wants your desire pointed toward love and marriage, not trained to need a screen.

How to actually stop

1. Cut the supply. Put a filter and accountability software on your phone. Jesus said if your eye causes you to sin, take drastic action (Matthew 5:29).

2. Know your triggers: late nights, being alone in bed with your phone, boredom, stress. Plan for those moments before they come.

3. Tell one trusted, same-gender believer. Secrets grow in the dark. “confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed” (James 5:16).

4. When you fall, confess it immediately and get back up. Don’t spiral in shame for a week. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us” (1 John 1:9).

5. Ask God for the Holy Spirit’s strength. “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Lust in the heart.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to depart into hell.”

    Matthew 5:27–30
  2. 02

    Your body is a temple.

“Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a man can commit is outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.”

    1 Corinthians 6:18–20
  3. 03

    Holiness and honor.

“For it is God’s will that you should be holy: You must abstain from sexual immorality; each of you must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God;”

    1 Thessalonians 4:3–5
  4. 04

    A way out.

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.”

    1 Corinthians 10:13
  5. 05

    A clean heart.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

    Psalm 51:10
  6. 06

    He forgives.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

    1 John 1:9

Common questions

Is it a sin if I don’t look at porn or lust?

Scripture’s concern is lust and self-control. In practice the two are almost never separate, which is why we teach to turn from it.

Is masturbation okay in marriage?

God designed sex for husband and wife together (1 Corinthians 7:3–5). Keep it shared, not secret.

Will God forgive me if I keep falling?

Yes. Keep confessing and keep fighting. Fighting a sin is not walking away from Christ.
