What does the Bible say about pornography?

Maybe it started young, or during a lonely season, and now it has a grip you can’t seem to shake. You hate it afterward, and you’re tired of the cycle.

The short answer

Yes, watching pornography is a sin. Jesus said, “anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28), and pornography is built to make you do exactly that. It also uses real people made in God’s image, trains your desire away from your spouse or future spouse, and pulls you into hiding. But you are not beyond help. God forgives completely when you confess (1 John 1:9), and He gives His Spirit to help you walk away from it, one day at a time.

Someone who’s been here

Lot looked toward Sodom

When Abraham and Lot had to separate, Lot “looked out and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered,” chose it, and “pitched his tent toward Sodom” (Genesis 13:10–12). A few chapters later, he was living inside the city, and he barely escaped with his life when God judged it (Genesis 19). It didn’t start with moving in. It started with where he kept looking.

Does this apply to women too?

Yes. Jesus spoke to the men in front of Him about looking at a woman, but the command is for everyone: “each of you must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion” (1 Thessalonians 4:4–5). Many women struggle with pornography too, often in silence because they think it’s only a men’s problem. It isn’t, and there is the same forgiveness and the same way out.

Is watching it always lust?

Lust is looking at someone with sexual desire for them outside of marriage, wanting them for your own pleasure. Pornography is made for one purpose, to arouse you sexually with people who are not your spouse. Watching it for that purpose is lust by definition, whether you are a man or a woman, and whether it is men or women on the screen. Even “just curious” watching feeds the same desire, which is why Scripture says to flee, not to test yourself (1 Corinthians 6:18).

What it does to you

It rewires desire, so real intimacy feels less satisfying. It fuels shame and secrecy, which push you away from God and people. It damages marriages and trust. And it escalates: what satisfied last month doesn’t satisfy this month.

How to quit

1. Confess it to God, fully, and receive His forgiveness.

2. Install accountability software and filters on every device.

3. Tell one trusted, same-gender believer, and give them permission to ask how you’re doing (James 5:16).

4. Know your triggers: late nights, phone in bed, boredom, stress, loneliness. Plan ahead for them.

5. Make a covenant with your eyes, like Job did (Job 31:1). Set no worthless thing before them (Psalm 101:3).

6. When you fall, don’t spiral. Confess quickly and get back up. Fighting a sin is not walking away from Christ.

If you’re married

Honesty with your spouse matters, and it is hard. Pray first, get wise counsel, and be ready to rebuild trust patiently.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Adultery in the heart.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to depart into hell.”

    Matthew 5:27–30
  2. 02

    A covenant with my eyes.

““I have made a covenant with my eyes. How then could I gaze with desire at a virgin?”

    Job 31:1
  3. 03

    No worthless thing.

“I will set no worthless thing before my eyes. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.”

    Psalm 101:3
  4. 04

    Flee sexual immorality.

“Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a man can commit is outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.”

    1 Corinthians 6:18–20
  5. 05

    A way of escape.

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.”

    1 Corinthians 10:13
  6. 06

    He forgives.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

    1 John 1:9

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

Can a Christian be addicted to porn?

Yes, many are. It is real and serious, and it can be broken with God’s help and real accountability.
