What does the Bible say about gossip?
It starts as “Did you hear about…?” or “Pray for her, because…” and somehow ends with everyone knowing something they shouldn’t. Is gossip really that serious?
Yes. Gossip is a sin. The Bible lists it alongside murder and hating God (Romans 1:29–30), because words can destroy people. A gossip can’t keep a confidence (Proverbs 11:13), and “a gossip separates close friends” (Proverbs 16:28). Gossip is sharing private or negative information about someone who isn’t there, with people who aren’t part of the problem or the solution. In plain words: if you wouldn’t say it with them standing there, you probably shouldn’t say it at all.

Miriam talked about Moses
Miriam and Aaron, Moses’ own sister and brother, started talking against him because of the woman he married, and questioning whether God really spoke only through him. “And the LORD heard this.” God called the three of them out, defended Moses, and Miriam was struck with a skin disease for seven days (Numbers 12:1–15). It started as a conversation between two people. God heard every word.
Gossip vs. a real concern
Ask: Am I part of the problem or the solution? Is the person I’m telling? Would I say this in front of them? Am I trying to help, or to be the one who knows? Even prayer requests can be gossip in disguise.
How to stop
Change the subject. Say kindly, “I don’t think we should talk about them when they’re not here.” Go to the person directly if there is a real issue (Matthew 18:15). Speak well of people behind their backs. And remember: someone who gossips to you will gossip about you.

Proverbs 11:13 - 02
Separates close friends.
“A perverse man spreads dissension, and a gossip divides close friends.”

“Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen.”
Ephesians 4:29 - 05
Do not slander one another.
“Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. And if you judge the law, you are not a practitioner of the law, but a judge of it.”
James 4:11 - 06
Go to them directly.
“If your brother sins against you, go and confront him privately. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over.”
Matthew 18:15
Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.
For one week, before you talk about anyone who isn’t there, ask: “Would I say this with them standing here?”
Common questions
Is venting gossip?
Telling a trusted counselor or friend to get help or advice is different from spreading it. Keep the circle small and the goal healing.
Is listening to gossip a sin?
Feeding it is. You can stop it by not giving it an audience (Proverbs 26:20).
What if the gossip is true?
True doesn’t make it right to spread. Gossip is about the motive and the audience, not only the facts.
